Aspiring to have a green home? Bear in mind that you need to first look at your house a whole system – changes made to one area may affect another. With proper planning prior to renovation, you can create a home that combines aesthetics and eco-friendliness. To make things easier for you, we've created a checklist for you to keep handy of the things you should look out for when planning your next renovation and when going shopping for your home.
Energy Efficiency:
- Choose appliances with the highest number of ticks on the National Environment Agency's (NEA) energy label.
- Buy appliances that meet your requirements and not above it to prevent wastage. Example, a right-sized refrigerator for your family size.
- Using natural ventilation and also fans to reduce usage of air-conditioning.
- Open curtains and blinds to reduce the need for artificial lighting.
- Choose LED lighting over compact fluorescent lighting.
Green Materials:
- Opt for non-toxic sealants, paints, flooring, cabinetry and countertops.
- Use natural materials for furniture and wherever possible.
Examples: Wood flooring instead of marble, rattan and wicker for furniture.
- Incorporate recycled and reclaimed materials. This means anything that can be reused as part of your home interior design. It could be glass bottles turned into lamps, and old bike wheel turned turned into a clock or anything that your imagination can conjure to breathe new life into your old things.
- Shop for non-toxic and biodegradable cleaners. Better yet, find out DIY cleaning recipes so you can make your own cleaners with common household ingredients like baking soda, white vinegar, herbs and of course, water.
