When trying to decide on one material for your kitchen countertop, a lot depends on three factors – the look and feel that you want, the amount of maintenance you’re willing to do and of course your budget. Here, we’ve rounded up 10 hot favourite materials for kitchen countertops and the factors you need to consider for each.
1. Stainless Steel:This is becoming increasingly popular in the last few years. The best thing about stainless steel it blends easily with any modern decor and instantly updates the look of any kitchen. It also comes in a variety of finishes and textures. The most common is brushed but you can also consider mirror-polished, quilted or machine-hammered. Cleaning is as easy as swiping but the downside is some may say that stainless steel can give a cold feeling.
2.Glass: Many homeowners like glass because it can be cut in any shape and stained in any colour. Due to the non-porous material, it is hygienic and easy to clean. The higher price might be an obstacle for some.
3.Concrete: Concrete is basically a mix of cement and an aggregate like sand or crushed limestone, which means depending on the mix, you can create the stain, colour and texture that you desire. However, in order to protect it from stains, water and heat damage, the surface has to be sealed.
4.Granite: Granite is a natural stone formed by heat and pressure that is obtained from the quarries. Therefore, it can withstand high heat. Also, its natural surface provides a luxurious, almost luminous look. Do note though since it’s a natural product, each slab of granite is different and you may not end up with a uniformed look.
5.Marble: Marble has a classic look that will never go out of style, particularly for those who love the versatility white. Depending on the type of marble, it can be cheaper than granite and stainless steel. It is however, a porous material and can easily stain and scratch.
6.Wood: There’s something about wood that gives a space a more casual and relaxed air. For those who love an earthy feel, wood definitely stands out from other materials. Due to the wide options for wood like oak, maple and teak, including different stains and sealers, wood can offer a highly customised look. It is a porous material that’s prone to scratches and stains is not consistently sealed and protected.
7.Quartz: Quartz appeared on the home decor scene only a few years back but has been steadily gaining fans. Quartz countertops human-made products that are created by mixing and compressing natural quartz with other additives. The main benefit of quartz is its luster which makes the surface look shiny. Adding to the list, quartz non-porous is virtually maintenance-free, requiring no sealing or polishing. 8.Ceramic: Ceramic tiles are made from clay and can be customised to suit specific shapes and sizes. The good thing is that if one tile is chipped, it can be easily replaced. Compared to granite and quartz, it is very cost-effective and you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The downside is that it is hard to keep clean because food particles and dirt will get trapped in between the tiles over time.
