Although we aren't biologically related to our pets (we wish we were!), they're still our family, and it's our duty to pet proof our homes for our furry friends.
Baby Proofing
Your pets may not be actual children, but the same items used to keep the kids safe also work well for keeping our pets out of trouble. Some ideas to consider for pet proofing your home are baby gates to limit access to certain areas of the house, covers for electrical outlets and safety locks for cabinets.
Choose the Right Materials for your Furnishings
With pets, additional considerations are needed when choosing materials for your furniture. Cats are fond of scratching things while dogs love chewing. Choose upholstery fabrics without looped threads so your pets have less to hook their teeth onto or claw at. Instead, wrap ropes around the coffee or dining table so they have something to scratch at or chew. When the rope is well used, you just need to uncoil and reattach a fresh piece. Do also consider investing in cushion covers, sofas, seating and bedding that can be easily removed and washed if soiled.
Choosing the Right Flooring
Your flooring should be hardy, scratch-resistant and made of easy-to-clean materials like cork or bamboo. Rugs and carpets are great for homeowners afraid their floors are too slippery for their pets. However, you might want to choose flatter weave rugs instead of rugs with wide looped strands so they're more scratch proof. An alternative option would be using carpet tiles instead of a full carpet as the tiles are removable and easily replaced. You may also wish to choose colours which complement your pet’s fur so it’s not as obvious when they shed fur.
