Feature Walls With Display Niches

i'm toying with an idea to build a feature wall (made of plasterboard) with small cutouts and niches deep enough to put items for display... with downlighting in each niche to highlight the display object.

anyone done something similar before?

This design was used for many years already. It will be easiler to us plywood to do it the plasterboard. Maintenance wise also easiler as you can wipe the laminate but not on plasterboard.
