Hi everyone,

Need urgently advice on the following:

Would like to find out what is the different between Die Cast Aluminium Vs Die Cast Chrome for the spot light material?

Which is better & why?

I am guessing its the finish?

Generally chrome has the glossy shiny look and aluminium has the matted brushed look?

There is no die-cast chrome.

Chrome is a form of plating (akin painting) on metal/plastic material, which gives it a shiny look. The material can be any kind, you can't see if its good when its covered by chrome. And since its a plating, just like paint or coating, it has the the tendency to corrode. Somemore its exposed to heat.

In that sense, I would feel that aluminium is better, since it has better resistance to heat, it is a whole piece of material instead of just a plating on some unknown metal alloy.

But on the other hand, chrome would look nicer because of its shiny surface. Maybe if a good job is with the chrome plating on good material, then it can last lor...

Many thanks l_club23 & zirhk3355. Agree with your comments.

Just not sure which supplier to take. Once offered Die Cast Alum with ballester from Europe (cannot choose which brand) and another supplier offered Die Cast Chrome with ballester (ATCO i believe) made from Australia (which is normally better).

Both are offerring Osram tubes.

Which is more important do you think in decision process as both price come out to be the same...The die cast materials or ballester/bulb?

Expert siah.......Truly aluminium die cast is better as Halogen emit alot of heat. Chrome die cast is usually made of cheap iron but chrome to give the product a shiny metalic look. When expose to heat, the chrome will either peel off or tanished with black spot surfacing.....very ugly

Thanks bullet :good: This is also what i heard (regarding black spots in the long run :ph34r: ) from other lighting shops.

My deco sense to decide the focus of attention in each area.

Usually for hall, it will be the Video display backdrop..etc.

Unless you wish to protray those starry effect on yr ceiling.

But then again, it may looks like UFO circling the universe.

Downlights enhance objects ( makes object not looks flat )

It is the lights, not the fitting that does the job. I won't ought for fancy fitting

Symetrical & simple makes ceiling blend with yr deco.

Also, chrome material, if contact with hands ( moisture ) will also tanished.

First 3 months very nice, after that gold & black.

apart from the casing -

go for 12V halogen - another type of lamp also looks like halogen but it's using 230v - more energy consuming. Most salesman will tell you all same same halogen.

I believe the 230v ones got a different name.

12V halogen lamp 's 2 "legs" are just 2 sharp pins.

the other type(230v) the 2 "legs" got a tiny round stub.

I even went to osram distri to buy the special DecorStar-IRC halogen lamp(energy saving halogen). But it costs $8 bucks each :unsure:

Is energy-saving lights dimmer than the normal fluroscent lights? Cos my HB wants to use the fluroscent light whereby I'm concerned abt the electrical bills $$.

energy saving bulbs are not dim, except for those no name brands. Go for either osram or philips, nothing else. If you want bright bright types, go for those "curled" bulb, philips called them TORNADO, they are very bright!:furious:

no worries, for fluroscent, get them to change the ballast to electronic ballast($12-$35).

save a lot of electricity.

Yup Chrome will get tarnished due to our humidity.

On another note, do T5 tubes consume less electricity than flourescent?

T5 is also a flourescent lamp(tube).

T5 is more energy efficient than T8.

for energy saving - look at their energy efficiency, the higher the better.

They say cannot change to electric ballast, comment that electric ballast will damage faster lor.

phlips and osram would have already closed shop if those comments were true.

use google to search for electronic ballast + energy saving.

Go to those light shops that has a in house electrician and not just plain salesmen who are more interested in closing deals.
