Hi,

Anyone used this or knows where to get the cheapest Aeron or Mirra Chairs?

Have tried these chairs.. find them real cool and comfy.

The backside doesnt get hot after sitting there for long also coz got some wire mesh like thing as the seats and the backrest.

Quite pricey though... not sure where to get the cheapest one...

anyone knows where to source for it?

you are right, these chairs dun get warm/hot after sitting on them for hours

and the posture is very good, used to get backaches sitting on normal chairs at home/work

years back when offices started using these chairs, decided that just gotta have them at home as well,

as i started to come home from work without backaches

but ikea has got something similar but of course not as good hermanmiller

yea... my office uses this chair too and it's confortable for sitting on long hours. bt herman miller chairs are expensive..

Taka selling at 2K+....my office using this chair too....not bad very springy and best of all, sit too long, butt still liang liang one....

yup, very cooling to sit for long hours,

nowadays if sit foamy-seat chairs, can feel my *butt* going to chao tar...hehe...just kidding..

What's an Aeron?

Anyone who spends a significant amount of time in front of a computer is always eager to emphasize the importance of the peripherals you use to interact with a computer-the mouse, the keyboard, the monitor. Sure, you can shave a few dollars here and there, but if you skimp on quality in those key areas, you will live to regret it.

After all, you probably won't notice if you get 5 fewer frames per second in Quake due to a slightly slower CPU, or if Word takes a few seconds longer to load due to a slower hard drive. But staring into a blurry monitor, or using a poorly designed mouse, is a daily reminder that absolutely everything you do with the computer will now be that much more painful of an experience.

The keyboard, mouse, and monitor are obvious points of interaction with the computer. But if you're doing all of your computing while sitting in the equivalent of a plastic lawn chair, you're likely to be very uncomfortable while doing it. As a gamer, you're probably going to be sitting in front of the computer for several hours at a time, so seating comfort is certainly going to impact your gaming experience.

In our quest to find seating nirvana, we decided to go right to the top of the heap. Rather than boring you with the pedestrian selection at your local office supply store, we're reviewing the Ferrari of seating -- the Herman Miller Aeron Chair.

Specifications and Details

Well, let's just get something out of the way first -- this is an expensive chair. Wait, no. This is a really expensive chair. How expensive? Suggested retail price is roughly a thousand dollars, though I have seen it available for as low as $750 on the web. Okay, now that you've had a few moments to recover from the shock, we're going to investigate what makes a chair worth that kind of money in the first place.

The Aeron is the top-of-the line chair model from furniture design mogul Herman Miller. You may hear people refer to it in the same breath as "Herman Miller's Aeron", the way gamers expect to hear "Sid Meier's Civilization". The Herman Miller company has been designing furniture since 1923 right here in the US, in Zeeland, Michigan. The company has been historically known for producing office furniture that's not only functional, but also ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing -- the holy grail of aspiring designers.

Herman Miller operates a dealer network throughout the US, and also sells its products on the internet, at http://www.hmstore.com. We were informed by HM representatives that the Herman Miller store on-line will match the prices of any store, so going to their website would be your best bet at getting good prices. Unless you buy it locally, the chair is drop-shipped from the factory, which takes about 4 weeks. The Aeron is shipped mostly pre-built in a really large box, so assembly is quite easy.

After unpacking, the absolute first thing you will notice about the Aeron is that it's an extremely cool looking chair. It's so cool, in fact, that you will immediately be the envy of everyone sitting around you, and it will be the only topic of discussion for the first couple of hours after you set it up. Probably the most apt description of the chair I've heard is that it looks like a prop from the set of the Aliens movie. Organic, yet futuristic. In fact, the Aeron chair is so interestingly styled and designed that it has won several design awards. Heck, it's borderline furniture art!

So what's behind all those good looks? The most unusual design aspect of the chair, besides its obvious visual charm, is the "Pellicle" material that makes up the back and bottom of the chair. It's a high-tensile open polyester mesh. Most chairs use some sort of foam to support your body, but the Aeron uses an approach roughly analogous to a hammock-the Pellicle material is held firmly in place around the edges of the chair, and it stretches to support your body as you sit in it, distributing weight evenly. One huge advantage of using an open mesh material is that air can flow freely through the mesh while you are sitting, dissipating your body's heat evenly. There's a reason they call this the Aeron chair, after all.

As for the frame, the skeleton is made of a very thick, tough plastic which you'd be hard-pressed to tell from metal. There are also some metal parts cleverly blended into key areas of the frame. The overall impression is that the minimum amount of material was used for maximum strength. It's a fairly lightweight chair to move around considering how solid it really feels.

When examining the Aeron chair, it's clear that a lot of thought went into making this chair not only pretty to look at, but comfortable to sit in as well. The Aeron actually comes in different sizes to suit different body types. You can choose from sizes A, B, and C depending on your body type, height, and weight. There's also no lack of adjustments on the Aeron chair:

The Aeron is also available in a variety of colors. The frame is available in two colors (Mica or Grey), and the pellicle material comes in twelve colors. While many of the combinations are a bit too colorful for my tastes, there's something there that will match any décor.

Comfort and feel

Without a doubt, before spending this much on a chair, you absolutely owe it to yourself to try it first. Like clothing, fit is an issue of personal taste, and what is right for us may be completely wrong for you.

With that said, there is no doubt in our mind that when you sit in an Aeron, you will honestly feel like you are sitting in a thousand-dollar chair. It exudes quality and comfort. While it may not be to everyone's taste, there's no denying that it's of the absolute highest quality-and given its price, that's something you would expect.

Perhaps the most obvious sensation when sitting in an Aeron is how "open" it feels-the Pellicle material really does give you the feeling of being supported but not confined. As you move around in the chair, the suspension factor of the chair changes to accommodate you. After a marathon hour-long gaming session your body won't feel fatigued or over-warm, as if you had been sitting in an overstuffed couch. This is, by far, the most impressive feature of the Aeron in actual use.

If you're used to traditional foam cushioning and are concerned that the Aeron won't support you adequately, don't be. The Pellicle suspension is every bit as comfortable as a thick foam cushion, while offering quite a few advantages over foam.

This approach to seating is so innovative, in fact, that it is reportedly being used on next-generation BMW and Miata motor vehicles. For example, the Miata MV-X concept vehicle includes seats designed in conjunction with Herman Miller, with Pellicle style backs.

Adjustments and Customizations

Being able to adjust the chair exactly to your liking is one of the Aeron's greatest features. All of the adjustments are clearly labeled with universal icons, and readily accessible from the seated position. Most are standard fare for full-featured chairs, with the exception of the Kinemat tension adjustment. . The chair designers refer to the tilt mechanism for the Aeron as the "Kinemat Tilt"; as you would expect, adjusting the tension here increases or decreases the tilt resistance. However, the Aeron's recline is not a simple arc. Rather, the designers use a patented mechanism to more naturally mimic the motion of the human body's joints.

In addition to setting the tilt resistance, you can also set the range of motion for both forward and backward tilt. Some people like the full range of front-to-back motion in a chair; some don't. For example, I prefer to rock backwards as I lean back, but not have the chair rock forward when I lean forward. No problem with the Aeron.

The only adjustment that I had a problem with was the arm angle. I tend to move chairs by grabbing them by the arm and pulling. Since the Aeron has arms that adjust left-to-right as well as up-and-down, that would cause the arm to adjust outward as I pulled it. It would be nice if there was a locking mechanism on the arm adjustment so I couldn't inadvertently change that adjustment every time I moved the chair.

Some people like to aggressively roll around in their chairs, and we're happy to report that the Aeron can roll with the best of them, thanks to its high quality casters and lightweight design. If you like stationary chairs, the Aeron can accommodate you as well, since the casters are completely optional and can be removed. It also bears mentioning that a few of the ergonomic features are optional. I found the lumbar support pad to be particularly uncomfortable, so I simply removed it from the chair.

Ballistics Report

Workmanship:

It's a thousand dollar chair, and the bottom line is that it truly feels like a thousand dollar chair. I think John Travolta said it best in Pulp Fiction: "God ****, that's a pretty f***ing good Milkshake. I dunno if it was worth five dollars, but it was pretty f***ing good." If the quality is there, the price is justified.

Innovation:

In this new digital generation, Herman Miller has stepped up to the plate to create the first of it's kind -- A chair built for us, people who spend almost half our days sitting down. It takes a lot of Research & Development, creativity, and downright genius to create a chair that is so perfectly fit, for our lives, and for our bodies. Herman Miller has achieved this with the Aeron, and more. Its aesthetically pleasing, awe-inspiring design deserves no less than a 5-star rating. Anything less would be an insult to ergonomics.

Price:

Unfortunately, not everyone has a thousand dollars to spend on their chair. There are those little annoyances like housing, food, and family that have to be taken care of first. There are probably plenty of decent alternatives to the Aeron out there that work perfectly well. Make no mistake, the Aeron is worth what it costs, but you have to have a decent chunk of expendable income to even consider it in the first place, which is going to place it out of reach for many gamers.

Comfort:

The open-mesh Kinemat suspension is definitely a big step forward in chair design. It works exactly as advertised-you always stay cool, and no matter what position you shift to in the chair, the mesh also shifts to fully support you. It's great. The only time we felt uncomfortable in the Aeron was when we were sitting near the extreme front edge of the chair. There is a big plastic "lip" at the front to help support you when you sit at the edge, but it feels a bit too much like the hard plastic edge that it is to be truly comfortable. A big plus here is the three different sizing options for the Aeron, and the almost infinite adjustability that the chair offers.

I almost bought this type of chair in Taka a few years back and it price was around 1k+.

But when we will about to place an order, I was told I have to pay for shipping and storage charges and all other charges when the chair arrive in Singapore.

After hearing this, I did not buy this chair.
