Recommended Posts

Hi onnik gal, do you have any photos of ur kitchen island? How much did u get it?

Thanks. And how big is ur kitchen layout?

hi MsPetite, my kitchen is still nt done up yet so cannot show u anything yet. the island itself will be pretty small in fact. i'm just using it as an extra surface area for my kitchen. if i am not wrong, it is about 1 - 2metres. forgot the measurement liao :D

as for my kitchen layout, i dunno how big ah, but i have attached a pic of my house layout for ur reference

Think having an island is very nice, but the kitchen must be big enough to accommodate. There was a tv show that showed a very nice kitchen with hidden hob, cabinet, washing machine etc inside fake walls along the side. If you shift the sinks to island, then you need to make sure your waterproofing of floor must be very good, otherwise if it leaks into ceiling of your neighbour, it'll be a nightmare to resolve coz it'll only happen after reno. So if you eat into study room, then make sure you do your waterproofing foolproof :D

hi MsPetite, juz some word of advise, island concept will take up much space and may need to sacrifise storage space. not ideal for small kitchen area unless some wall hacking done to the immediate next room, if possible.

initially i wanted 2 island perpendicular to my kitchen walls. after knowing how much storage space i wasted and lack of space planning for my fridge and built-in microwave/ oven, i forgo the idea and went for a L-shaped cum semi island concept. i still get my island hood tho itz placed in an awkward position (15 degrees off the parallel due 'fengshui'). sink in the middle of the kitchen which can be accessed from the cooking vacinity and walking passage way. fridge, built-in microwave and oven are placed side by side. took me and my friend 1 month plus of brainstorming for solution and space planning.

however, if u really like full island concept, do take into consideration of the wet area water proofing, drainage pipe, cold/ hot water pipes, hiding of pipes...etc. full or half island hood is priced higher than wall mount type. if u believe in fengshui, do remember that the cooking hob and water sink should not face directly opposite of each other. in other words, 'fire and water clash'.

hope this helps....... cheerios

If u really want an island in your kitchen, then you may just have to construct the island in the centre of your kitchen and forgo the traditional cabinet along the length of the kitchen walls, else there will very little space to walk. Make the island the focal pt of your kitchen and install cabinets above the island. Can also consider shifting the cooking area to the service balcony.

As for lack of storage space, can make use of your pantry store. Build some storage shelves to store pots, pants and kitchen appliances which you think your are not going to use often.

Btw, where is your place? There is a lot of odd corners. May have to do a lot of customisation to fit the odd corners.

Oops, just realised cannot shift cooking area to service balcony. :good:

Hi TYM,

Yup, service balcony is not allowed for cooking and im aware of that. I may change my thought on a kitchen island but need to have talks with various IDs for their opinions first before jumping on the decision.

Thanks!

hi fungamer,

thanks. my intention of getting a kitchen island is actually for preparing purposes not much to cooking stuff as I believe it's really will cost a bomb to do all the waterproofing and re-piping and stuff like that.

Gosh, am so busy with work lately that I hardly have time to come in and check the posts. :)
