Colonial/peranakan Look

Recommended Posts

The pictures don't look very peranakan to me...

Magazines in Singapore are a lousy place to start as they are focused on the mass market (ie contemporary modern looks). Buy some books that deal with Peranakan houses and heritage and look to their pictures for clues.

A Peranakan design is more than just finding an ID... In many cases, it's the decorative items the owner has collected over a lifetime-- furniture, ceramics, paintings, books, etc.-- which make it work. In many cases, I think it's also a case of educating the ID rather than finding an ID who knows exactly what to do.

It's also not just about liking or loving Peranakan design. An important thing to consider is whether you can live with the Peranakan design in the long term. It also means using certain colour schemes, certain types of wood furniture, certain types of tiles, etc. Your butt must be comfortable on certain types of chairs, for instance. It means not having any Ikea stuff in your house as that detracts from the overall theme. Etc. Etc.

actually the picture ive posted is nothing to do with peranakan. its juz a sample picture which was given to a fren of mine by his id. wat im trying to share is that the id has his own way of design approach and the picture shown is actually the product given to my fren during his second meeting. it looks quite real to me as this help in giving us the picture somehow or rather the finish look of our intended design theme. :notti:

anyway if im not mistaken, my fren theme was modern tropical.

wat makes a place look peranakan is usually the blend of Malay/Colonial interior with Traditional Ming or Chinese furnitures, ornaments & antiques, right? correct me if i'm wrong...

I guess the ID uses good design software then.

To make a house really Peranakan will take a huge effort. You'll need to find people who can copy and reproduce what they see from photos. You'll need to custom-make things, and find people who can and are willing to do it.

And once you live in it, you'll understand why certain things were done in a certain way.

Are you ready to be Peranakan?

Not sure if you've already started your reno...

I've seen colonial/ peranakan designs in Interior Magazines like Expat.

Some shops in Dempsey road actually give away free copies! The mags usually cost $5 each.

to get authentic peranakan look can be expensive. if cost is not an issue you should consult a designer who has actually done up a similiar peranakan place. Normally specialist designers with this credentials are expensive. if cost is an issue , you should try and do a modern peranakan design. basically it means having a modern shell in the interiors and furnish it with peranakan furniture. i have seen in some design like this in some websites... they look good.

Hope this helps.
