By Faith Teo 08 October 2007 IT'S time to rev the engines and floor the pedal. Come 25 Nov, up to 100 race-car drivers may demonstrate their power in Punggol. The cars are likely be involved in racing demonstrations, showing off what they can do in segments like drifting and straight-line sprints. Sources revealed that souped-up road cars and unmodified sports cars would be taking part. The New Paper on Sunday reported lastmonth that Punggol might be the first location for series of professional go-kart racing events. The heartland races will serve as curtain-raisers for next September's Formula One event. Sources familiar with the event say that the location and date have been confirmed. And as a bonus to the main attraction of go-kart racing, there are plans for the day-long event to have race demonstrations featuring some 100 cars. Punggol residents need not worry though. The site is believed to be some distance away from heavily-populated areas. NOT WORRIED A resident and car lover who wanted to be known only as James said the event would inject some life into the estate. 'It's so quiet here. A racing carnival with some noise and activity would be welcome. Maybe it will earn Punggol a reputation for being 'happening',' hesaid. Mrs Endora Alexander, 32, felt that as long as residents are not too inconvenienced, the races would be a welcome activity 'as long as it's not disruptive of everyday life, is not too noisy and doesn't pollute the area'. She said: 'Residents should still be able to get in and out of their living areas. 'If the organisers find an area close to the heartlands, but far enough not to disrupt traffic, then I think it's a good idea because it gives people something to do and see.' The New Paper on Sunday learnt that among those who are taking part in the event is Mr Winson Ow, who is well-known in the racing fraternity. He has more than 200medals to his name after 15 years ofracing and is still involved in the sport despite having bowed out of the circuit three years ago. He runs car workshop CS Racing and also trains racedrivers. He is believed to be entering several drivers trained under him for the demos, but would not confirm it. He did, however, show us a car that might be used for such events. The black Subaru WRX, one of the fastest in the region, was custom-modified at his workshop and boasts 800bhp (brake horsepower, a unit measuring the power of a car's engine). It can go from zero to 100kmh in about fourseconds. (See report below.) The fastest version of WRX sold by Motor Image here is the STI, which has just under 280 bhp. Mr Ow, 40, said: 'We can change the engine's performance by using the computer unit to play with ignition and fuel settings, for example.' Also in his workshop were twogo-karts. One, with a single engine, has a top speed of 25kmh, but the twin-engine version can run at about 100kmh. A lighter version of the twin-engine is used for racing. Both versions are expected to make an appearance at the racing events. One race driver, who declined to be named, said: 'I'm glad that F1 has paved the way for more support for local race-related activities. 'It's good to know that racing is finally being seen as a serious sport now. The reckless wannabes on the road have given racing a bad name here, but hopefully, awareness and education will change that lopsided opinion in time. 'There is a professional side to this sport that should be highlighted.' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to race it? You'll have to strip it Reinforcement bars. They keep cabin from crumpling on impact No licence plate as car not allowed on public roads No radio or air-con Plastic windows (they're lighter) Lever activates parachute at back of car if extra braking power needed Room for only one: The driver Pasir Ris St 41 is near where? oh... so will i be the one hearing the Vroom Vroom Vroom? tot you moving also ? katvolution 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2007 Pasir Ris St 41 is near where? oh... so will i be the one hearing the Vroom Vroom Vroom? Ermmm...I had only been to the flat twice. One to check out the surroundings, another time with the HDB contractor to check for defects. Next Sunday, will be my third time going there. For 'open door'. Btw, where do you stay?zeny bro u going? my BIL is also involved in this. kept asking hb to take part but he turned down the offer. but the fastest version of STI is just under 280 bhp without mod is it?my hb's workplace is only like 15mins drive there. n we seldom drive during the weekends but everytime have to spend nearly $100 just to fill up a tank. i feel buying a car is not xiong..but maintaining one is.n honestly i feel to buy a performance car in spore a bit wasted becoz of the speed limit and there is simply no place to test out the full potential of the car esp since its ex. but good thing is that there is sepang and pasir gudang for speed addicts like my hb. *hahahha* same here. my hb was driving a HC like yours before he changed to STi.Yup, sad but true about the limitations on Singapore roads. Totally agree with you on the maintaining part. Kind of xiong. Now still quite new, not much problems. Wait till the car gets alittle bit 'cranky' that is when all our $$ flies. For my case, I am more addicted to the speed and the power churned out by the car, but my bf is ok with driving it slow. Tell you something even funnier, I am the one who hopes to drive it into the tracks of Sepang and PG, not my bf!Jokes aside, I am still a law abiding citzen. korea 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2007 HI diva,How much is your instalment for car?actually, the amount for the monthly installment depends how much deposit you want to place for the new car. if you pay quite a huge sum of $$$ for the deposit then your monthly installment will be lesser. if you pay lesser deposit then your monthly installment will be higher. so overall, you can decide how much you want to pay for the monthly installment. !! my hb and i decided to pay lesser for the monthly installment so we paid quite a lot for the deposit when we bought the car. your heart is itchy and want to get a new car??? its time to get one lor. !!I see, so judging from u and korea's reply, generally abt $500 expenses (without installment).sometimes, probably more that this amount! buying a car isnt expensive but to maintain a car is very expensive! !! korea 0 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 (edited) my personal opinion is no point buying sport cars in spore bcos so many traffic lights everywhere! so how to drive super fast and get the feel of its performance?! even the expressways in spore also quite a short distance and sometimes so many cars. there were several times we saw some sport cars drove until soooo fast and ended up they also stopped beside us at the traffic lights. hahaha. unless you're those who often drive to malaysia. i always saw many porsche, lamborghini, ferrari, mercedes, bmw sport cars etc at holland esp on weekends. my hb and i arent into sport cars. we're more into spacious family cars. I do agreed that buying sports cars in Singapore is relatively not a very good idea. All the traffic lights, jams TPs and ROVs, not to mention speed check cameras etc... But again, driving fast is not the only way to feel the power of the car. Speed is not = power. Nowadays, ppl seldom play high end. Most of my friends indulging in driving performance cars concentrated more on the low -mid end. I don't really know much, but I had once heard that it would be better for tracks bah. Hmm, perhaps Diva will be able to shed more light on this, since ur hubby often go tracking.

The car is only about 2 months old. We got it in mid August mah. Waited real long for it. But the wait is really worth it. Currently, we only 'run' 2000+ nia leh.. Done the 1st servicing at 1000, and the next servicing is at 5000.. It's better to wait till it hit 5000 before we slam on the pedal. Btw the way, our number plate starts with SGW. We signed the sales agreement in March and was promised delivery in July. But dragged for about 2 weeks. We bidded for our number plate in June, that's why it's not SGX or SGY. And you are right about the speed thingy. It's not high speed that makes us 'wet', it's the pick up of it.
