time to share a little about my recent trip

we spent a total 7 days in thailand, first 3 nights in Chiang Mai (CNX) and the next 3 in BKK

never knew that CNX is so fun until i started researching into my trip

had booked the trip at the NATAS fair

didn't know where to go so thought 'why not CNX?'

Day 1

on arrival, we were picked up by the local agent and brought to our hotel

the distance is like from changi airport to home only, took all but 15 minutes

although the hotel is a little old, it's spacious and in good condition

most importantly, our room looks out to the Ping River

after a hasty lunch at the nearby market, we went on the half day tour

visited the gems store - the usual hard-sell but we didn't buy anything ;p

local dried produce store - bought some Siang oil, tom yam paste and what-nots

bags and wallets (calf, elephant, crocodile, sting-ray skin) - didn't buy anything though really tempted to get a elephant skin wallet coz we were skeptical even after the salesperson told us they don't kill the elephant for the skin

silk factory - first time i know how they get the silk from cocoons. the silk worms are boiled ALIVE so that the cocoon is not damaged :jawdrop:

honey store - bought bee pollen coz it's supposed to be good for so many things. hopefully it'll at least live up to some of its claims

went for thai massage after the tour

not too bad, better than some of those in BKK

then on we go to the night bazaar

it's so commercialised that we didn't get anything from there at all

Day 2

the part of the trip i was looking forward to the most - the Elephant Nature Park!!!

we did the one day trip as we didn't have much time in CNX to begin with

however, we are determined to go back for more :good:

the day started with the pick up, we were shown a video on route to the farm, which took 90 min

during the video, the story of Jokia was told and I was moved to tears

i cannot begin to imagine how anyone can do this to another living being :furious: :furious:

Jokia began life as a logging animal, forced to work even when she was pregnant

one day while she was dragging logs up a mountain, her baby fell out with the sac and she witness her baby rolling down the mountain, powerless to do anything :~

she refused to work after that, lying on the ground mourning the loss of her baby

her 'owner' used a metal hook to hit her, when she didn't react to that

they poked her in the eye with the metal hook, blinding her in one eye

when that didn't work still, they continued to poke her until she finally couldn't take it

she swang her trunk at the Kwan (mahout) to stop him

angered by her move, the Kwan took a cross-bow and shot her other eye

blinded, the 'owner' still tried to force her to work!

Lek (the founder of ENP) managed to rescue her after some hard negotiations

at ENP, i basically stayed around Jokia as much as i can

feeding her at meal times and bathing her in the river twice!

it was so much fun even though we were completely wet

we also met similar-minded people from all over the world

near the end of the day, we were shown a video of how they 'break' an elephant to get it to work

i couldn't bear to watch and stepped out of the room

just the thought of a baby elephant being trapped in a cage that barely fits it, getting poked by metal hooks from all sides and screaming for help that never will come is enough to break my heart

as i am typing this, tears come to my eyes from just recalling the description :(

at the end of the day, i told myself i will be back

this time, we will be doing the elephant volunteer which entails a week's stay at the park

many of those at the park told us it's their second visit and they are staying two weeks or more

after freshening up at the hotel, we proceeded to a Khantoke dinner

it's a traditional northern thai dinner that is served on a khantoke (a small table)

the dinner came with cultural performances and i'd have to say some is pretty good

after dinner, we went back to the hotel to rest our tired body

Day 3

the first half of the day was pretty much wasted

upon arrival at CNX we had discovered one of our luggage's lock damaged

the airline staff told us they'll be sending it to the luggage shop for repair

the luggage shop called us the next day to tell us that they do not have the original part and proposed to replace it with a s/s part instead

we rejected this offer as the part is neither original nor matching with the rest of the bluish green 'plastic' luggage :(

after much to-ing and fro-ing, TG relented and ask that we purchase a new luggage and claim the amount from them, with a claim limit of 8,000baht

so the first half of day 3 was spent on negotiating with TG and the luggage shop regarding this, and to get a new luggage from the shopping mall

when we reached the shopping mall, we couldn't believe the kind of price they charge for luggage!

a simple hard-case samsonite cost as much as S$600, and that's the price after discount :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

in the end, we settled for a American Tourister, supposed lower-end range of samsonite at over 7k baht

after settling the luggage issue, we met our driver recommended by the local agent

we went to the tiger farm first, to see tigers up close and have photos taken

it was really an unforgettable experience!

we saw lion cubs, young tigers, adolescent tigers and adult tigers

they were quite fun to play with, though the image of a powerful swat of those gigantic paws never did manage to leave my mind ;p

i learnt something new during the visit, tigers smell just like a sweaty cat

the smell of terror after not been bathed for three months is the smell of tigers

after the tiger farm, we went on to Doi Suthep

it is a temple built in the middle of nowhere on the mountain

according to local legend, the location was selected by a white elephant made to bear the relics of buddha

the previous king had placed the relics on the back of a white elephant

the elephant then went on and on before lying down on the exact place where Doi Suthep is currently at

all i could think of at the temple was asking for protection of all the elephants

that is how affected i was by my visit to the ENP

coming down from Doi Suthep, we asked to be taken to one of the restaurants along the ping river

having dinner there was an unforgettable experience

the atmosphere is really good, food equally good and overall really enjoyable for him

not so much for me because i became buffet food for mosquitoes

he didn't get even one bite but my legs are covered in them :furious:

after dinner, we cross the pedestrian bridge to warorot market, the night bazaar for the locals

there i saw something else that angers me - a cageful of puppies with price tags on their head!

imagine they are being sold like a dead object, with price tags stuck on them!

that kind of spoilt the whole thing for me and we went back to the hotel soon after

Day 4

we had to wake up real early to check out and get to the airport for our flight to BKK

also, we had to collect the damaged luggage to bring it to BKK for luggage claim - yes they wanted to see the damaged luggage before giving us our claim :furious:

our total luggage weight was close to 40kg already because of the three luggage and we were wondering how much we will have to pay in excess charges when we return to singapore :jawdrop:

on arrival in BKK, we proceeded straight to our hotel

turn out it's buried deep in the soi, and there are two separate buildings for the hotel

the room is so much smaller than that of ours in CNX but well, we aren't there to stay in the room anyway

we dumped our luggage and dashed out to have our wanton noodles

thankfully it's only a short 2 min walk from our hotel because the weather is really hot!

there isn't much to talk about for the rest of our BKK trip as it's pretty much the usual stuff

we've got some interesting purchases though

we got quite a few pet beds from the weekend market

i was quite shocked that the lady still remembered me from my last trip there

she smiled at me through the glass door even before we could confirm it's the correct shop :P

got a total of five pet beds, pictures below with the HHS door in the background as a reference for size

this was a bargain at 900baht for two as there are the last two she has got left

and also because i'm her 'best customer' (her first words when she saw me)

IMG_2270.jpg

serene - this is the large i've gotten for yuki

hope you like the colour and the size will fit her

IMG_2273.jpg

this is the medium that i got

i've already got two but just can't resist getting more

cats are known for sleeping in many places instead of just one fixed location

IMG_2272.jpg

this is the small for kitty, although she has already got two of them :P
