No nonsense blog reno on a budget (Scandinavian theme)

Recommended Posts

This is my first blog post, would like to share my experience as a newbie in the reno journey. A very simple and decisive summary to share to anyone.

Unit background.

We bought a resale flat for a relatively low price. Conditions were average and all rooms comes with build in wardrobe. Living room feature wall condition is alright but laminate on it is something we did not like. Kitchen cabinet condition is only average and hinges are all rusted. Structure of cabinets are still acceptable.

IDs met

1) Famous Nick from Renotalk

- Pros:Price is relatively cheap,

- Cons: Attitude and style is a little weird. If without prior warning from fellow forumers beforehand. I would feel he is kinda bad as you might have the impression he is cold and a little rude on his communications method.

2) Andy from Entity Conceptwerks

- Pros: Price and is also on the low end, you'll need to get a couple of quotes and "push" the prices a bit. The only ID who would point out issues when giving suggestions and planning. Might be due to his experience in the field.

- Cons: Some might find him not willing to take/do many ideas. That might be due to practicality and not a yes man for anything but the end product not up to expectation. (But that is just my guess, might be he just feel that he can't earn much on the item)

3) Joy from Thom Signature

- Pros: Very friendly and easy to talk to. Even manage to get in touch late in the night when booking for appointments.

- Cons: Prices not as low as the rest, carpentry of houses viewed not that impressive.

Chosen ID:

- Andy from Entity Conceptwerks due to his competitive price and communication style which we think is very important. Gave me estimated 1 month duration for renovation works and quoted my around $18k for my renovation.

Major items quoted:

- L-Box and false ceiling in living room.

- Feature wall and cabinet for TV.

- Full height shoe cabinet.

- Wall tiles overlay for master room and common toilet.

- Changing of door panel on all lower kitchen cabinets.

- L-Box for master room.

- Polishing of bedroom floors.

- Wall painting of whole house.

- Changing of 1 bed room door and common bathroom door

- All lighting points for false ceiling, L-box.

Renovation progress:

- Work started immediately after confirming. Chose tiles for bathroom that weekend and work started the following monday.

- Unwanted fittings removed and toilet are being worked on now, really faster than i expected.

Pictures attach of floorplan, 3D drawings and renovation progress of the first 3 days. Stay tuned for next update :)

So some small updates.

- Forgot to mention that tiles were chosen from Soon Bee Huat at Changi road.

- Done selection of laminate and wall colour. Very long and tiring process. My advise is to gather a "mood board" in which you bookmark all the various designs of house you like and chose based on it.

- Did some shopping for my dining table, want a long table and found a reasonable priced one in an online store called "Hipvan". Total damage less than $370 with some promo yesterday.

- Went to Gain city expo and purchases 3 big electrical items: TV, fridge, washing machine. Price weren't fantastic but $500 purchase using NETS will get $20 voucher. Had $60 in total which is nice. Total damage around $4k.

Reno progress:

- Toilets tiling are done.

- Getting carpentry measurement next week.

- Picture of common bathrooom.

Can share the toilet tiles' reference no? From soon bee Huat right? And how much does it cost? Looks really nice!

Tiles attached below, it depends on the lightings too. Showroom is very brightly lid so it is a different colour compared to photos i've taken.

Picture before was taken of common toilet. Attached are tiles selected for both bathrooms, hope you find this useful.
