ID wants to charge for cabinet knobs?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, hoping for advice for the experienced people here!

my ID is building a multi purpose cabinet for our hallway (L 5410mm X D 600mm X H roughly 3200mm), in laminate. Within the cabinet we also have adhesive art tiles 20cm X 20cm which he is setting into the recessed area of the cabinet which provides a lovely feature area.

we are in middle of ID works now (total contract with him was almost 40k for adding bay windows to 4 rooms, study room addition of table and cabinets, re-laminate of a gourmet island kitchen, re-do of two doors at the foyer shoe cabinet, and the multipurpose cabinet mentioned above). The multipurpose cabinet itself cost $8100 and the tiles cost $1220 plus GST. He has been an on-the-ball and committed designer albeit rather expensive.

question - he now says they can cover only cost of normal laminate knobs on the multipurpose cabinet but if we want brass or copper or metal knobs (which he advocates strongly and we agree), we have to pay ourselves as he can't absorb it

tbh it's only another $200 or so to buy knobs... but am I being ripped off here? He's already charged 40k for NO flooring, bathroom or major works Bc our condo is very new and the only ID we wanted was better usage of bay window and aesthetic stuff mentioned above

Advice appreciated  thanks!

yes brass/metal knobs are very expensive on their own and usually it's not included upfront unless the owner asked for it day one.

Hmm. Ok thanks nerrad. Lesson learned for next time...

You can also buy your own knobs and give them to your contractor if you don't want to be chopped by the contractor.
