hubby and i will be going over on Sunday to collect the keys (after 6 loooong months), and will be inspecting the house. can't wait!

update! so we finally got our keys yesterday did inspection, the house is in generally good condition cos the prev owners really maintained it well despite having lived there for 13 years. the only thing is that the parquet flooring has sustained a number of huge scratches. probably got it when they were moving. now hubby and i are thinking of just doing the grinding and varnishing of the parquet flooring (originally left it out because we were trying to reduce the total cost). our contractor quoted us $800 for 3 bedrooms. is this reasonable?

will be taking photos of the 'before' of the kitchen and 2 toilets tonight. stay tuned!

It is reasonable as i did for my previous 3 bedrooms before and it cost a little more but because room sizes were bigger. It will be almost as good as new after

thanks everyone! i need help once again... any recommendations for a good and cheap fire-rated main door? ours isn't in fantastic condition, and the door lock set was installed upside down which is really irritating. and our contractor will charge additional for varnishing.. so i'm exploring the option of changing it altogether

Is your door single or double leaf? I changed my main door too and because it had to be double leafed, fire rated, it cost a bomb

Lazyfatcat007, may i have your blog address please? sapphire89, i must admit i was attracted by LG's looks. it looks really sleek and stylish. but i read in one of the forums here that apparently it may have issues if installed lower, i.e. below a false ceiling? i'm not sure also. so confusing

If you are having false ceiling, they might need to have to make an indentation for the aircon cos got minimum clearance dimensions... thats all I know for this...

The aircon blower unit can be installed at any height. There is no restriction. However, because the water discharge pipe needs to be lower than the unit and the pipe needs to slope towards the discharge outlet, the higher the blower, the easier to install. Otherwise, you may have an ugly pipe running right across your wall. The best way to explain this is to look at the installation in my room.

If I install my unit any lower, the discharge pipe will be lower than my window top. So I had to install my unit higher.

My unit had to "eat" into the false ceiling to attain the required height. The other reason for the indentation is because the cover usually opens upwards, and you need space to open the cover.

For aircon, my advice is never to choose based on looks. You will regret within 3 years when the unit starts to leak water, fail to cool or behave funnily, even if it continues to look pretty. My current Mitsubishi Starmex is one of the ugliest looking, compared to my previous units, but so far it has proven to be one of the best. But I must say I am not aware of the current makes of Starmex.

If your existing door is already fire-rated, how about re-laminate it to save the cost? I did that to my main door and gotten the carpenter to 'scrap away' the design to make it into a smooth layered door.

Wow, thank you so much for the advice! It really helps. I think we will go for the older model of Starmex as well. The last time i checked, Gain City was out of stock for it... hopefully they've brought it back in stock. Easiest and most convenient to get it from there. thanks again!

that's not a bad idea! i think it's already fire-rated - original BTO door from 2002. how to relaminate? i don't want to ask my contractor now cos we plan to do it a few mths down the line after we've saved up money once again... can just contact any carpenter or door specialist i guess?

hello everyone! so the reno has finally begun. yesterday was Day 1 - hacking. last night the husband and i went to take a look and they're already halfway thru hacking - kitchen cabinets are gone, all toilet fittings gone and half the tiles are gone. here are the original photos so you can compare 'before' and 'after' eventually:

we also got loads of things done yesterday - finally finished buying all the fittings and accessories for the kitchen and 2 toilets! thank you SO much Lazyfatcat007 for your Wasser Bath recommendation. their prices are REALLY competitive, and we ended up removing some items from Hoe Kee cos the price was just much better at Wasser. Next post will have details of what we finally bought. Exciting times!
