plainsharon 20 Report post Posted November 7, 2013 (edited) himy house will be doing the cement screeding from HDB too. They told me that there are different level of cement screeding. 40mm,50mm,55mm. HDB give FOC is only 40mm which is not enough to be level with the toilet /lviing tiles..... And required to top up 100 dollar for each bedroom for addition level meaning total of 50mm-55mm. Anyone expereince this? I Hi tirimisu, was told by my contractor something like that too and the hdb also said max is 40mm, so that time my contractor will liaise with them n let us know if need to top up. Wow $100 per bedroom is quite alots.. I have not start my Reno yet though..As our experience, we were there when the contractor were there for cement screed. In fact before our cement screed were poured the contractor contact us to ask if he could go down as he was going to do it for our neighbor upstairs and at the same time to check how much drop down they needed to leave for us. Instead of asking how much we need to pour.I told him were still need walls in the rooms to be hack before he could go down to pour. So we knew exactly when they were going down. As we needed to leave 5mm from the master bed room door so we told him that and on the day when they came, my hubby was around and they were professional to measure the leveling from the bomb shelter even though we are pouring bedrooms only, they have considered the leveling so that it will not affect the opening of the bomb shelter's door.Nothing about how much mm to pour we're mentioned. Not sure if all HDB's contractor are from the same contractor though. We did not tell HDB how much to pour in advance as well.My hubby were there to better communicate with them too. Anyway, we took a sample of herf from our supplier to let them have a better idea what we wanted. They were flexible about how much to pour too. Hope this will helps. I was told by HDB that cement screed will be in 4 weeks time but 1 week after application I call the officer in charge to check when the cement screed contractor will be coming so as to be able to plan follow up hacking and other jobs for my contractor, it was a good excuse for us to know when the cement screed contractor was coming. The HDB officer told me to check with him 2 weeks later however 1 week later the cement screed contractor called to arrange for cement screed already. plainsharon 20 Report post Posted November 8, 2013 Oh just wondering did you pay to them for any additional lvl? Sorry for being off topic in your reno-blog.... Look forward for your completed reno .. :notti: No Worries Tirimisu~ Nope, we did not pay them extra for adding, neither we were sure how much mm they pour, but they measure according to the bomb's shelter door drop down and our MBR door's drop down. Thanks anyway. Am looking forward for my completed reno as well.
plainsharon 20 Report post Posted November 8, 2013 (edited) UpdateDay 28Hubby was bored of going down everyday, so we will go down every 2 days to capture more changes to our reno process. This morning Mr. K took this photo and send it over to me as was super concern about the space to put grouting Mr. K assured that there will be enough space for grouting and he always did it this way unless his clients mentioned that they would want a wider grouting.Pros about wide grouting:It looks nicer. Cons about wide grouting :The cement grouting will crack eventually as all cement will crack, so having wide grout will make it more obvious, i guess. small grouting will crack too. So eventually we decided to go ahead with what Mr. K had plan. Method Mr. K uses is freehand laying of the brick wall, about the other method which others sometimes use, using wood block to support or create a wider space for grout it also allows the bricks to be more neater while freehand makes it more natural. Depending which you might like. Edited November 8, 2013 by plainsharon
Makanology 29 Report post Posted November 8, 2013 I think stacking the bricks this way with a not-so-wide grout is better as the bricks will act as a support for one another. We laid our bricks in a random manner and after a few months, the cement cracks... We have been experiencing falling loose bricks now and then

We have been experiencing falling loose bricks now and then Oh my! falling loose bricks? even after a day or 2 of the grouted brick wall, realised there was some fine lines in the grout. Cement grout really is easily cracked.

arissang 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2013 I like how your kitchen is starting to look!! Have you tried the square downlight already? I'm thinking of buying from Taobao too but not sure whether to get round or square and how many watts to get >.<Thanks~ am looking forward for his each day process, hopefully the end work will blend in nicely. We have yet to try the downlights, installation part will be at the nearing end. We got square as we prefer and felt that square will fit our theme better, we prefer the sleak neat lines of square downlights instead of the curvy round ones. So it depends on individual. Our lights are 8w thats the lowest watt we could find. As we are thinking of energy saving as well thus look for the lowest watt, further more we have alot of lighting points in the house so if downlight itself is not able to light up the rm we will switch on cove lights if its still not bright enough we still have track and pendant lights in the living room. I have both downlight and cove light too but me and my wifey usually switched on the cove light as it is bright enough for the living room. As for the downlights, I use them sparingly, only when I want to have some cosy effect...
