Hack Or Overlay Living Room Of 28 Yr Old Flat

Hi, I am confused over whether to hack or overlay the existing ceramic tiles (with homogeneous tiles for living room and bedrooms) of e 28 yrs old flat. My contractor advised that by choosing a smaller homogeneous tiles, overlay will not be an issue. An according to him, if i choose a smaller size homogeneous tiles (300x300mm), e overlay will last longer.

Like to know anyone did overlay of homogenous tiles (600x600) over ceramic tiles for living room and bedrooms? Hows the result?

Anyone has any advice whether to hack or overlay?

You have to consider the facts before you decide what to do..

1. the cost of hack and overlay, usually the diff of $500+/-.

2. the height of the floor level.

3. the durability of the old tiles undernearth, will it pop or creak?

These are issues I could think of. My final verdict is: hack and lay new tiles for peace of mind. Afterall, is already 28 years old, anything could happen and is tough to follow up. And you need to live for a min.of 5 years.

- What about the old flooring is made of Marble. will this be ok to directly overlay homogenous tiles without hacking the marble away?

My current reno works will be overlaying my living room floor with 600x600 homogenous tiles. ID said it's no problem woh..

Hi, as my knowage is better not to overlay not safe , why not ask the ID to warranty for a 3 to 5 year?

if marble is nice for you than better keep it as its costly to install marble nowadays.

do a repolish and give it a renew life.

it's the color of the marble that I dislike. it's brownish and looks dirty. I understand repolish can only bring back the shine but never the brighten or lighten up the color.. (see picture below).. One ID told me that it is ok to directly overlay homogenous tiles directly over the marble flooring without hacking since marble tiles are very level and flat.. Anyone tried this?

One of the main concern is, in the future, if the underlay tiles start popping up, it may damage your new floor tiles. Is all up to you whether wanna take this bet.

The safetest way is of course hack the existing and re-lay, provided if you have the budget.

For me, i only overlay the existing floor tiles with laminated flooring

Yes. It will if you unlucky.

You had a nice marble flooring. I will polish it to give a new life man! It shine man!

I understood you don't like the gain but if you buy or customer made some white cabinet, you can cover area which is more dark and brighten it overall.

you can use stone effect wall covering to match it to the marble flooring to give a cozy nature effect.

Alt overlay with vinyl tile, laminate flooring.

Btw hacking marble cost more. Ask your contractor for the price.

Considering hacking the floor? Do remember to do waterproofing. VERY IMPORTANT! You will face leakage problem after sometimes. This is very common nowadays. Contractors did not do a good waterproofing job and that's the start of your nightmare! Take care!
