Regarding the box up of toilet sewer pipes, some ID suggest box up using calcium silicate; Some suggest the top sewer pipe can box up using cabinet, the 2 verticle pipe cannot box up. Which is the better way and what is calcium silicate by the way?

I was thinking of that arrangement too, but gave up that idea cos I think it'll block the light and the dining area will be dark.

Collected few years ago lol. It's not bad when we move in so didn't do any reno. Need to move out before reno start.

Actually flooring is the main concern cos the current white ceramic flooring with black cement grout. Looks dirty to me. Let see if out of my budget maybe I'll consider just overlay laminate on it. But it might not be the best solution 'cos got child at home always spill something on the floor.

Going to meet up with ID next week. So exciting

bb1314, i also have the thinking of saving by not doing hacking to existing floor but then worry few years down the road, cannot bear with it and need to do the hacking when we are already staying in.

before i see one of the post about tiles having termites, i intend to hack and do tiles as worry termites on laminate etc.

Now i will have to re consider. hehe

you hack, then can check got termites or not. if don't hack, got termites also don't know.

and termites usually attack wood stuff first. after that only tiles....

I have decided to hack and lay homogenous tile. More durable.

So far received a few quotes, most ranges from 40-50k. 2 exceptionally high at 55k and 69k. Have not really scrutise the 2 higher one to check what's the difference.

Just wondering how come so diff. in price:

whole house hacking

A: $3200

B: $5400

whole house homogenous tile:

A:$14000

B:$19000

They are exactly the same thing. Is more expensive equal to better workmanship & higher quality?

usually when the prices r marked up very high, it is partly because the quotation goes through alot of hands... i.e. the id, main-contractor, sub-contractor, maybe FL workers... imagine every "hand" mark up around 20%, the final quote will be seeing at around 60% increase.

As for better workmanship & higher quality, how much difference can that differ ? If u comparing a lesser experienced vs a very experienced worker which is still unlikely to see such a huge difference in price. Maybe for higher quality materials to cost more but hacking uses only breaker n labour, still does not justify for that price difference.

Another possibility will be their very high overheads.... Is the ID(i hope is id,really too much if its a contractor) from quotation B having a very big showroom ? employing alot of ppl inside ? big cars ?
