I'm intending to install Cat6 cable for my 4-room HDB and need your advice.

The purpose will be to stream and access stuff via NAS or media box to TV or laptop.

Which brand do you recommend? AMP or Beldan? If AMP, how much did you bought it via distributor? If budget, which brand is affordable?

What length will be enough for Living room to the 3 rooms assuming 2 points per location?

Was intending to go SLT to source for the cable as i believe ID or contractor will quote more if they buy for me.

I liked AMP so my answer is pretty obvious. The rest of the brands are pretty ok, so long they are cat6 grade. Why? Our movement of data are not greatly impacted vs Corporate. It depends on your contractor, which brand he is using, as such, you are likely to use his brand. A little diffcult to justify which brand is affordable if you get me.

Of cause, you can out source the materials yourself like my case. Beldan not bad, but not for me, AMP is one of the leader in network cable. Also, what is your budget? AMP is considered highly priced, I bought mine in bulk roll form. I did tried to buy loose from Sim Lim Square stores, they jacked their prices more than 100%.

Assuming your place is new, like mine, you should be good at 100-150m range. You can try to measure the length yourself, go the longest route, add 20%(minimum) extra as allowances for termination/relocation etc. The location of your hub will also contribute the length requires on your case.

I bought mine at $220(300m). I think I had used 1/3 of it, The rest still in my storeroom :bleah: You can ask around, I can offload some to you.

Let me start with NAS. If you are IT savy, you can build your NAS or buy Synology(OS is user friendly, easy to kick start for 1st time adopter) or Qnap(If you are good with open source softwares, will be better), like wise, later brand will be more expensive.

For PCH, picture quality definitely better than AcRyan IMO. Compare AcRyan alone with Smart Tv & Bluray player. AcRyan probably will perform better in streaming the contents.

Smart Tv will do well, which I'm using at the moment. It is capable of reading subtitles as well, tried embedded subtitles though. As for downside, audio quality, but if you are streaming normal video eg like drama., should be fine. Another will be picture quality, the bigger your tv screen, the picture quality will be obviously bad as well, based on my 65" Plasma Tv.

For Bluray player, they will do well, as you mentioned, subtitles issue. Picture & audio quality should be good. No worries.

You are ordering Cat6 cables from Monoprice, custom length with keystone? Or loose cable to run your house? My answer will be run wired than wireless anytime. For small devices like tablets, smartphones & notebooks, should be fine on wifi. For decorated streaming, wired preferred to avoid lag.

You can run your network cable over the air, just got to make sure they are shielded & not near to electrical wires.

oh ya, talk about shielding of cat 6 cables in the false ceiling - they can use those inflexible grey pvc pipes (like water pipes) to do it but u gotta do this while they are building the frame for your false ceiling...otherwise, you can only opt for the flexible plastic tubing (accordian type, slightly thicker than a plastic water pipe) to shield...i can only use the latter as i ran my cat 6 after...

Acryan is ok, simple GUI, most of the times, plays whatever files I had thrown in. Monoprice is ok, decent stuffs from them, not sure whether their shipping had came down though?

Just ask your contractor to supply for you, no point buying yourself if not too many points. Savings might not be huge. If possible, run all points at 1 go, avoid adding any points later, you can cater additional points for future expansion, like IP cam etc. Can you let me know where you want the host your NAs, that will makes the linakge easier. If possible, draw simple diagram in your floorplan.

Blue boxes are the keystone plates/LAN points.

- MBR: TV + ? 2nd port in case wireless signal weak when door closed

- Study area is for PC

- Living room tv.
