Pre allows u to use external amp to drive ur speaker...eg if u got a floor stander that is hungry for power, the avr will not be able to drive the speakers to its full potential...with pre u can hook to external amp to drive the speakers while the avr workload will just process the signal n volume. So ongcs was talking about pre SOURCE whereas melmeow was talking about pre OUTPUT?Pre source for players to connect to, then the AVR will connect to the TV and speakers directly..Pre function/out to connect to external amp to drive speakers..
