Many thanks for your thorough explanation ongcs! :)

I won't been hacking the floor that's why I am looking at the false ceiling as an alternative.

You mentioned it will be good to fix a network port instead of running the cable and let it linger there..

Do you mean fixing something like to my partition/divider after running the cable across the false ceiling?

This is a picture of something similar to study table for better illustration.

I intend to run the cable as illustrated by the red arrows. So do you mean fixing a network port like the image above at where arrow 2 ends?

Yup, I understand the differences of power voltage between Singapore and USA, but I thought all we need is a transformer?

Are sound systems in Hongkong cheaper than online? I will be going there in April! :dancingqueen:

Wow, how nice of you! When is the mini gathering? I will try to pop by if I can make it! :)

Or maybe not, since I can feel poison coming.... :P

Yes, Install a fixed network port after running your network cable onto your partition. Yes, you can end there if your system is going to be house there.

The network port should be located near your system to avoid messy wires, your power wall socket should be near it too. For easy cable management.

You can use transformer for small items, for big item ticket, better to buy 230 voltage system. Not all are cheap, generally they are still cheaper than SG, due to HKD & no GST in HK. If savings are little say 10-15% for big ticket item, I will buy for local warranty coverage.

Meanwhile, you need to audition 2 items, AVR & speakers, have a feel what you like, nothing beat your own ears. Bring your own materials you would like listen & familiar with during audition, for easy comparison at various shops before you sat down on your target.

The mini gathering should be on 10 Mar since Kim can't make it this coming sun (03 Mar).

Sorry for my stupid question but what is AVR? :P

Is it something for my players to connect to before they can be connected to the audio system?

audio video Receiver, a combi of pre source & amp. It will deliver video & audio to your source output and also does the additional, amplify the sounds. If you have a few players, say bluray player, media player, apple tv etc, you can connect them to AVR & 1 source output to your lcd tv thats all. it make the connection simple avoid messy wirings.

Yes, very likely, if it is just pure amp, you can't connect any source player in unless your source player supports analog sound output. :yamseng:

That means a pure amp can only accept analog sound input? Whereas a AVR can accept digital.

Only RCA/Analog input in amp mostly. AVR not just accept digital, it is a combi of pre & power. AVR can do more than that, It is viewed as a centralised processing system with hdmi & digital input. It gets abit complicated if you want to discuss analog sound.

Bluray player->AVR->Speakers

Bluray player->Pre amp->Power amp->Speakers

Hi Ongcs,

I'm interested to know more about setting up the AV systems. Thinking of having an entertainment system in my spareroom. Can I join the gathering to know more? I can prepare some pasta.. Cheers.

Remember to get avr with pre function....very important for future expansion...
