Recommended Posts

can someone pls tell me what happened to my 3yo leather sofa?

or can share your experience?

how long can a leather sofa last? lightly used, stay alone in the house and always work late.

initially i bought a PU sofa, it was torn in less than 1 yr.

OM told me if they replace the pu sofa, the problem gonna come again.

so they suggested to pay $800 to upgrade the l-shape sofa to leather.

i happily paid $800 and this took them 6mths to deliver. leaving me using the torn pu sofa for another 6months.

now, its 3 yr, it starts to peel/crack again.

i condition the sofa every 2-4months.

what would you do?

other parts of sofa also going to crack/peel soon...

i bought another 3 seater sofa for my mum.

the seat is one piece leather seat.

however, the one piece leather seat is made up of 2 pieces of foam or sponge or whatever you call it running across the 3 seater horizontally (both inside the leather of course), as per the pix.

i bought dinning chair, not leather, and they are still in very good condition despite 5yrs already.

when i first saw the sofa, it was retail at 2800 for leather. however, sales told me PU is equally good and for the fact that pu is softer, so i opt for pu.

but it was torn within a year.

om suggested me to top up $800 saying they will bear the rest of the cost.

i agreed and then, 3yrs. gone again.

totally disappointed with them.

I think it's either manufacturing fault or basically design flaw. If this 2 pc seat cushion designed in this manner, at least they should come out with something to hold them in place to avoid what you're facing.

totally disappointed with them.

esp the leather sofa, i feel so cheated, i should have got them upgraded it to leather for free! why did i pay $800, meaning over 2k for a sofa that lasted only 3yrs?

and my mum's sofa, i also think they are not being honest.

took more pixs today

The sofa was designed that way in order to save cost as they can then use 2 smaller pieces of leather instead of a single large piece which will cost more so it is not really a single piece of leather that was being used for the seating portion.

Your leather tore because the leather stucco that was applied on the leather surface to cover up the imperfections is pretty thin. The problem can be minimize to a certain extent if a thicker stucco had been applied to the leather surface while it was undergoing correction. However, this is a common problem whenever you are not prepared to spend more for better quality leather.

If you read all the other postings on leather sofas in this forum, you will realized that it is perfectly normal for a $2K-$3K leather sofa to last only 3 years or less. :sport-smiley-018: If you want it to last longer, then you have to pay for the quality of which Kalimantan's leather sofa is a perfect example.

Lousy PU leather sofa costs more than $2K... speechless!

I'm not sure if HTL Manufacturing Pte Ltd is still selling leather sofa at 11 Gul Circle, but they are one of the few leather sofa manufacturers in this region to produce and export leather sofa to US and Europe. Their quality is superb; of cos their price is equal. I previously bought a set of 3+2 seater recliner sofa for a BFF as house warming present at $3.5K, it could easily have been $9k if it was display in Life Storey or Mod Living.

its not the leather... its the sponge/cushion (i dont know what you call it) inside the leather.

as for leather, after the PU torn within 1 yr, i was only told to pay $800 to upgrade cowhide as per what they have in showroom, but on the invoice, it only put full leather.

recently before cny, i ask a professional leather cleaning man to clean my sofa.

ok just for the factual - the cleaning cost me $250 for about 1.5 hr of service (2 men clean at the same time).

I raise a few questions to him. I can't remember the exact details, but i will translate in layman term (sorry i no expert in the technical terms in this industry)

Q1) can recommend a few good retailers that has top quality leather sofa ?

A) <i put the company names in my laptop - i will answer this again> - but the company name that you buy OM is not listed as a top brand

Q2) How to maintain color of the leather ?

A) Need to bring back the sample of the leather piece (which each sofa should have) - they will then try to match it chemically. Cost about $500 and spraying a coat that can last about 3 years.

Q3) How to maintain the inside and elasticity and comfort of the sofa ?

A) need to bring sofa back and then they make adjustements like top-up and putting springs (like a bed spring coil found in famous beds) - i can't remember the details...

Q4)The leather shows the vein ...

A) he told me something which is blue vein and can be seen over the years - he told me the process of making leather ...over years leather thin down, can see the leather vein, only way is to apply some chemical. - related to Q2.

q5) if i buy branded sofa ...he knows anyone that can give reasonable discounts and not make super-normal profit ?

A) He knows one or two few branded sofa people (question 1) and can quote his name - but i did not ask further.

q6) What is his experience like ? (honestly i don't know aabout this industry, but ask for fun)

A) more than 10 years or so. big companies like airlines / car also engaged them to perform leather uphostery

q7) why do people buy cheap sofa and expect they bought real leather and surprised it won't last a year or two ?

A) a lot of people want to buy cheap and do not want to pay more. This is a mistake.

I just seen your latest uploaded photos. The sponge/cushion are in 2 parts to accommodate the 2 separate pieces of leather. It is full leather, only that it is full split leather. They have given you a very thin split leather. These type of leather usually used for the non seating parts like the back and sides of the sofa. As they have used it for the high contact areas like the seats and backrest, it is not surprising that it has now started to tear and crack.

i did not ask for leather sofa, i bought pu sofa and peeled in less thmn 1 year,

i work in advertising, seldom home, sofa is for show only as i dont watch tv either, no time.

OM asked me to top up $800 to get good leather, the amount was proposed by them.

and told me last longer.

so i paid more than 2k for this sofa, and if i knew it was going to last me only 3 yrs. I WILL NOT TOP UP AND WOULD INSIST FULL REFUND when the pu sofa peeled 3yrs ago!

hi daveyap, the peeled pictures you saw earlier is mine... the problematic from pu upgraded to leather omne.

however, my mum's leather sofa did not peel, the leather is still beautiful after 4-5yrs.

but look at these 2 pictures, i'm referring to the sponge inside...
