Should Not Change Laminate On Furniture?

Hi, we bought a resale condo that has lots of laminated build-in furniture in black color. I prefer light colors in the house so ask my ID to change the laminate but my ID is against it. He said tearing the old and pasting new laminate will make the furniture look ugly as the glue will be uneven. Anyone any advice? Thanks.
