Possible Issues With No Floor Skirting

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My ID is proposing to tile my floor but with no skirting. My main concern is when cleaning the floor, my vacuum cleaner or mop sure will hit the wall. Not sure if it will dirty the wall? Anyone with no skirting can comment?

Thanks!

Hi, I've read from magazine that it takes more care to clean when there's no skirting. Have to avoid wall when cleaning and also suggested to clean sides of wall with piece of cloth by hand instead of mopping etc.

Dont listen to him of cos, he just want to save a few hundred dollars of you, u consider this, not skirting, when u mop the floor wet, the edges sure dirty one whole line of dirt, worse still the water slip under the paint, then the paint pop up after a few month, bigger mess.

sometimes the wall is a feature wall, then no skirting looks nicer.

But practical problems are many.

When mop, then the bottom area will have grey smudges. Dun look 5 star.

If the floor is wet, then there is potential for capilary action where the water seeps up the wall, behind the paint, leaving whitish spots on the paint.

Actually, I find that huge marble skirtings really add class to an area. Therefore, I try to make the skirting more obvious, rather than blend them in. Some ppl use wooden skirting on tiled floors to get the warm feel.

My hubby is a Taiwanese and when he saw the skirting in our house, he almost fainted. He was in the reno business for a while in TW and he said that's used like 50 years ago. Now, no designer or contractor will do that for new houses in TW.

He still can't get over the skiting in our house in Singapore till today.

So how is it done in TW? I'm not keen on skirting either cos my furniture will all leave a gap between the wall as hiding places for crawlies. But then there's the higher maintenance issue without it.
