Air Con Compressor - Can You Switch It Off?

Hi All,

Relatives wanted to give us a single split non-inverter for our living room but we do not plan to use it much, if at all.

Can I fix it and off the compressor totally, only switching it on say 6-8 hours before I want to use it?

Don't want a white elephant compressor sucking electricity every day even though I use it like less than 5 times a year.
