Hi, any comments feedback on the ikea kitchen?

I was quoted approx $9K+ for the ikea kitchen include all the internal basket and all soft closing for the drawer. Price include delivery and installation cost.

Any comment on the quality? The price quoted is for a better wood quality. But dun like the table top and their table top is a bit on a high side. Wonder can I choose my own material outside for the ikea table top. Really like their kitchen design.

The soft closing is so cool at the IKEA showroom! But its way out of the budget...Anyone know if we can DIY the soft closing ourselves? I think there's some sort of hinge available at the hardware stores

I replaced my old kitchen with an Ikea kitchen in early 2010. I have the photos in my blog :

http://tamarindthings.blogspot.com/2010/01/my-new-ikea-kitchen.html

I am actually quite happy with it. I am a big fan of Ikea for 20 years already and I am well aware of their quality. I did not want to spend too much on the kitchen, and that time Ikea had very good promotion for kitchens, so I decided to use them.

For the Ikea kitchen, the solid table top is very good and I like it very much. The doors still look like new now, only thing is that the bottom strip of the door right under the kitchen sink fell off. I think if you get those solid wood type there will be no such problem.

Another reason why I chose Ikea is because I know that 10 or 20 years later, they will still be around. I can easily replace the doors or other parts without the need to hack the entire kitchen.

I was very disappointed with my old kitchen, the cabinet under the sink rotted due to moisture, and I had no choice but to replace everything.

There is nothing wrong with Ikea furniture. My whole house is filled with Ikea furniture that has lasted me close to 20 years and still look timeless. While searching for a flat, I have seen many other flats with built in cabinets and furniture that looked so outdated after 10 years, compared to my house. I also have not seen another kitchen that is nicer than my Ikea kitchen :P

I think different people with different usage will have different comments. If you would use your utmost effort to take care of them, there are no so called product that doesn't last.

Anyway, for product that would last you 20 years would be good enough, as time passes by, the design would go out of trend, by then you would want to change them as well. So this applies to ikea as well, even for built in carpentry. If you do not take care of it, even with the best material and workmanship it will wear and tear. So it depends very much on the user.

I can almost say a lot of design doesn't last forever not more then 20 years, unless those simple design and color, but they will turn yellowish over time.

If anyone bothered to search, they would have found that there was a previous thread on "carpenter" vs "ikea kitchen"

IKEA is often associated with "nice, cheap, stylish and fun"

In terms of kitchen stuff only, IKEA would not meet the above if you had done your homework. You would note that i had specifically excluded quality in comparison as it would be difficult to compare skills of carpenter.

That said, my sofa bed and table, photo frames, etc... many stuff are from IKEA. Im in fact an IKEA fan, i visit ikeahacks daily for fresh ideas, but ikea kitchen cabinets never appealed to me. They are freaking expensive when u consider those drawers.

Do also note the IKEA warranty, please take a look at the finer prints before you buy based on 10yr warranty. Their compensation varies according to age of furniture (oh provided u keep the receipt hor). Most importantly, a term in there states that their appraisal is final. :)

Of course, carpenters don't give warranty, so some might say IKEA's warranty might still be better than nothing!

Any reviews, be it good or bad, should be used as a reference. As they always say, take stuff written on the net with a huge dosage of salt.

I wonder if those people commenting about Ikea kitchen, actually have installed an Ikea kitchen in your home and used it for years ? If they have not done so, then they are only guessing or "hear people say" and how can their comments be taken seriously ?

My first kitchen was done by a so-called kitchen specialist and cost me a lot of money, but the cabinet under the sink started to rot only after 5 years and I had no choice but to replace the whole thing. I installed Ikea kitchen because it is cheap, and the quality of the counter top is very good, it is actually LG HI-MACS installed by Luxx and I am very happy with it. I realized that my first kitchen had a bad quality solid top. So going to a kitchen specialist does not guarantee that you will get a good long lasting kitchen. For my Ikea Kitchen, I can replace individual cabinets in the future if necessary, and I know that they will always be around.

My children love to climb onto the Ikea tables, jump on their Ikea beds and the Ikea sofa, and generally very rough with all the Ikea furniture. So far nothing is broken, only some scratches but I don't look too closely.

Ikea's Swedish design is really timeless, and yes we only choose the simple designs and mostly dark color wood so we don't even notice that they turn yellowish, they just turn darker.

I just bought a new flat and they have so many built in cabinets which looked so old after only 12 years. Now I have to spend a lot of money to hack all of them.

I saw the hinges at the hardware stores, but seems like you can't DIY without help from the contractor... =(

I once saw on Ebay selling drawer soft closing system that u can DIY, not sure if it works

I guess it's better to be installed by contractor as they have the knowledge to bring the best out of the product, i.e the soft closing effect.

I suggest you visit Interior Affairs and Tai Seng Avenue to see their kitchen cabinet, then feedback here if you still feel handles are out of fashion.

If you like, you can engage them to custom build your kitchen cabinet.

Soft close hinge are actually very cheap now. You can get BLUM soft close hinge for about $3+ each. Just need to remove your old hinge and fit it yourself. The size should be quite standard but its good to check before getting the bulk to replace all your cabinet hinges. I replaced all my kitchen hinges myself. But you might need a bit of trial and error in the beginning to sort out the alignment after the installation. After a few doors, you should have no problem after.
