scanteak very ex, was actully looking for some kind of factory sales, thanks anyway

I bought some teak furniture from Leon, its a furniture shop at East Coast road. They were nice to re-oil the finishing before delivering it to my place. I got the items the same day I bought and price is reasonable. They are located near Siglap Kopitiam...

I am looking for a teak table with stainless steel legs. I have seen those from Originals and Teak & Mahogony -- at least around S1500 to 2000. Wondering if there are other alternatives. I prefer chairs that come separate with other designs. Thanks!!

I think if they are using solid burmese teak wood and genuine stainless steel, then the price you mentioned is very reasonable. I used to buy teak furniture more than a decade ago and dare say that the quality of the teak is not the same. For that kind of price, I have seen some shops using only veneer, and the stainless steel is actually chrome plated mild steel. Better to buy from more reputable shops - its definitely worth the investment.

Hi Walkingdead,

I did a few research myself. Honestly, I think those genuinely made from solid teak will definitely burn a hole in your pocket. The regular items ranging from a few hundred to $2k+ are mostly veneers or even laminates. Not sure true or not, a friend told me teak is expensive because teak tree has to grow for a certain years before it can be cut down. Teak is very strong and durable, thus difficult to work with hence escalate the price as well. So if you really find solid teak furniture at a very decent price, please share.

Actually, I was just at Scanteak at Joo Chiat Road. They're having a National Day promotion - a dining table (1.35m) with 2 chairs and a bench is going for $1199. Quite a few other deals in store, their website also has the brochure but I think it's worth a look. Their workmanship is not bad, from what I can see.

Bear in mind they use young indonesian plantation teak, not the really old ones from the forest so it's cheaper. Also means that it is not as dry as the older ones.

My dad used to be in the teak business - Burmese teak is the best quality (most expensive), followed by thai, indo etc. Burmese teak trees tend to be 200-300 years old before they are selected for furniture, Indo/Thai typically around 70 years. The older the tree, the dryer the wood hence harder and more resistant to bugs etc. Once a teak tree is selected for harvesting, a big strip of bark at the base of the tree is stripped away, thereby killing the tree as well as letting it dry out naturally. This takes at least 1 year, after which the tree is chopped down. Once it is sawn into whatever sizes, again, it is allowed to dry again for eveness and to prevent warpage during furniture construction. This is why if you custom make teak furniture, there is a lead time of at least 3-4 months cos this final process is critical.

I think this is as much as I remember liow, sorry for boring you guys. :)

Just to share, my friend recently brought me to Breakthru Mission at Pasir Panjang area to see wooden furniture. I think they have decent balinese wooden furniture. Some are quite exotic and modern. Perhaps you guys can check it out too!
