Suspended Cabinets - Does It Really Need 6" Hollow Block Support

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I would like to do suspended bottom cabinets for my kitchen but am getting conflicting advice from a couple of Renovation companies, even the well-known ones.

Most advice to have 6" hollow blocks at the back of the cabinets as a "fulcrum" support, but one large ID simply insist that it is not needed, and that those who wants to do that simply do not have good carpenters. So who is right ?

Has anyone been through this discussion? I tried to search but could not find anything.

The thing is - I do not like the idea of having cement fixed permanently on the kitchen floor - in case we want to change layout later. Also suspended cabinets seems to look "nicer" - maybe subjective I do agree. Even the 6" hollow blocks suggested by a few of them are probably going to be cemented to the floor tiles and will need hacking later if we change the layout or concept. The other option is using legs and high pliths, but that is not suspended cabs then..

So hope to get some advice, especially from those who has install suspended cabinets. Thanks!

vanity cabinet can be suspended. Some ppl want a base because it is not easy to clean the floor underneath the suspended cabinet. it's very individual, do what you think you like.

I dun see the value of having a full depth suspended kitchen cabinet. Firstly, light is not going to reach all the way back to the 600mm depth. U will create a dark zone. Is better to set in somehting like 400mm, so at least the lighting can reach the rear skirting. Easier to mop the floor also.

Sometimes, yr kitchen sink.. the waste pipe goes straight down to the floor, so.. the rear skirting is also required to hide the pipe.

my first house did total suspension using fabricated angle bars.

it looks good but the angle bars can be seen within the cabinet

my current house uses a 6 inch fulcrum support which totally look suspended to me

still looks nice and i have led rope lights below which works well for me....

seriously end result you should ask yourself is when you renovate, how often would you change concept....
