My 5 Room Bukit Merah Flat T-Blog

Recommended Posts

Hi strikingreality,

Drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send you the catalogue. You can check them out at Park Mall also :)

Hey Bro, I can't find this on their website! Any idea how much is this in Singapore? Can you share the catalogue with me?

Thanks and Thanks for your offer of your probable ID as well. We've just confirmed our ID over the weekend. Seen his works and am fairly certain he understands what we want.

I'll finish my reno before yours and will update with final pictures so you can have a look when it's done! (T-blog currently very un-updated 8| ).

Now comes the somewhat difficult decision - which TV to buy.

We're looking for a TV for the living room, and I think a 55" TV would be quite a nice size :)

I've done some homework on TVs so far. From what I've found out, plasma TVs have better performance (darker blacks, faster response times, better overall picture quality).

Plasma TVs:

- Wider viewing angle

- Good black levels

- More reflective screens

- Higher Energy consumption

- More affordable

- Better, more "surround-looking" realistic 3D performance (heard this from a salesperson at Parisilk)

LED TVs:

- Narrower viewing angle

- High energy efficiency

- Ultraslim design. small bezels

- Much more expensive

- 3D is more "flat" as compared to Plasma TVs

So far, here's the TVs I've shortlisted:

Samsung UNC9000 series LED TV

samsung_c9000.jpg

Pros: Super beautiful, super slim. Remote LCD screen / TV control. Good image quality

Cons: Expensive - I think its about $7000+ the last time I checked. Not a SMART TV (not made to work directly with Apps like the newer models)

Reviews / More information: http://reviews.cnet....0.html?tag=rnav

Samsung UND8000 series LED TV

SamsungUND8000series.png

Pros: Yet another stunning design with a almost negligible bezel. Picture takes up almos the whole screen. Cool 2-sided control panel with keyboard

Cons: Glossy screen too reflective. Expensive - about $5000+ , poor screen uniformity, picture quality not great.

Reviews: http://reviews.cnet....dy;similarProds

Panasonic Viera TC-P55VT30 Plasma TV

PanasonicTC-P55VT30.png

Pros: Outstanding picture quality for both 2D and 3D. Best performing TV tested in 2011 (from CNET). Not as expensive as Samsung LED TV models above

Cons: Higher power consumption than LED TVs

Reviews: http://reviews.cnet....7-34468892.html

I think I'll probably make the most practical decision and go with Panasonic Viera TC-P55VT30 Plasma TV. It'll be function over form for me.

Now, does anyone know what's the best price for this TV, or is interested to get one too? Group buy time! :sport-smiley-003:

I just came across another LG 3D LED TV - the LW 9500.

It's supposed to be LG's flagship TV, and it looks the part too:

LW9500_45_R_610x697.jpg

I did a quick comparison and read some reviews, and I think it's pretty ok too.

What really caught my attention was the price ($2,999 before discount) for the PC show 2011.

Came across the flyer on VR zone forum:

lghome_Page_2.jpg

If they have a discount, throw in some freebies (speaker, blu-ray player etc) and have a credit card promotion, this looks like a really good buy.

Will go check it out at the PC show later. Anyone else interested? PM me :)

Hi everyone, and sorry for the lack of updates! It's been some time - have been busy trying to sort out my ID.

In the meantime, I've also visited:

1. Ngee Hong Furniture http://www.ehongfurniture.com/

- Good collection of different types of furniture, mostly modern contemporary

- Prices seem ok, but quality and workmanship looks pretty so-so

- Nice collection of bar stools

2. Motto http://www.motto.com.sg/

- Very nice selection of dining chairs / lounge chairs / tables

- Most fitting for my decor / scheme, a lot of wooden modern classic looking pieces

- Lounge chairs about $700-$800 before discount, dining chairs about the same, saw a nice table at about $2,600

- Prices are quite steep, but quality and workmanship looks good. Think I can source similar pieces from Thailand for much cheaper

3. Pomelo (recommended by adidaem) http://pomelohome.wordpress.com/

- Very nice, classic-looking storefront, but not very big

- Expensive, "designer" - looking furniture with a small selection of dining chairs, tables, loungers / sofas

- Huge selection of bubble lamps, modernica pieces, but not really my cup of tea

- Saw a nice big stainless steel dining table from Blu Dot which was not as expensive as I imagined (about $2,000+)

- Overall, decent prices for the design quality and brands, but small showroom and selection

4. Massimo http://www.massimmo.com/

- Possibly the nicest designed collection of fabric sofas I've come across

- Sofas are very cutely named after different types of pasta

- Liked the Tagliatelle, Penne, Bucatini, Mezze, Linguini and Vermicelli sofas (yes it'll be a tough choice)

- Comfort and "plushness" a little bit lacking, but sales lady said there were different configurations for softness or hardness

- Stitching and workmanship looks good

- Pricing is a little expensive, but for the design and workmanship looks pretty worth it. If only the plushness were better

Wish I had more pictures to share, but I guess that will have to wait til I'm at home :P

Visiting the new place on Friday - will take more pics to share with everyone.

I like both shops.

Came to know Motto, cuz we shortlisted the owning company, Project File as one of our IDs. Motto has really nice furnitures, agree that prices are steep, but aren't they supposed to have a sale? How's the sale prices like? I have not had the chance to visit them since the sale started.

Pomelo is one of my favourite shops cuz I like almost everything in the shop. Owner is a very humble man who is v passionate about what he does. Showroom is very small, but items are very well designed and good quality stuff. :) He has actually a larger selection. If you see anything you like from the catalogues in his shop, you can actually check if he can bring it in for you.

Yeah, so far I've brought 3 persons/groups to Pomelo and they all love the shop. Think it's great that Singapore is getting more nice stores where we can find gorgeous stuff for our place. The drawback for Pomelo (and other small stores) is that you may have to wait up to 3 months for new pieces to arrive, unlike those more established places where they could have ready stock on hand.

I've one more new furniture store I'll like to recommend. It's Danish Design Co located at the Pasir Panjang warehouse where Lorgan's is located. Lovely lovely pieces of furniture, good design, good quality stuff.

http://danishdesignco.com

As for sofa, I find the quality for Domicil to be decent. Maybe you can pop by the 11 Gul Circle showroom? They can pretty much do any sofa you like in fabric or leather and in a huge range of colors and design.

Hi strikingreality,

Good to know that there's still visitors to my T-blog! :P

Motto has a sale now from about 25% for most pieces to 60% for a table I was eyeing.

I think they're worth checking out as they have really nice designs. Quite similar to Lush though.

However, I have a suspicion I'll be able to source similar pieces (design and workmanship wise) from Bangkok at a fraction of the price.

So I don't think they're really good value for money. But just my humble 2 cents

Yeah I really like the Pomelo stuff. One of the staff gave me a Blu Dot (one of the labels they carry) catalogue which has pretty nice stuff.

He says the prices are in USD so need to multiply about 1.6 times for a rough idea of cost (inc shipping).

I really like a dining table there which I might buy, but I'll bring my yet-to-be-confirmed ID there after he's confirmed and get his opinions. Haha

Hi adidaem,

Yes I've come across that place before. I've been to Lorgan's twice and both times they were closed.

I thought they were out of business or had lazy salespeople :P

In any case, the name Danish Design Co already makes it pretty appealing. Thanks very much for the recommendation.

I actually checked out your blog and places visited on Google Maps before heading to Pomelo and Massimo.

Will go check out Danish Design Co very very soon. Oh and Domicil as well. :)

Btw if you're keen I can bring you to the JB lighting shop. I go in with my family every once in a while.

So far no horror stories on my end - maybe because we drive a small honda fit and dress pretty shabbily

But do PM me if you're interested. I should be able to make it next weekend once my ID is confirmed.

Will probably want to bring him down too.

Thanks for sharing! :) I think Motto source their items from Indonesia, iirc. I am not sure if we would be able to get it in BKK though, have not found any BKK furniture shop that stock stuff similar to Motto.

I know Lorgans source their items from BKK and the Hawaii-5-O which I showed you earlier stock many of the items which Logans have. I think there must be an OEM manufacturer somewhere in Bangkok doing all these pencil legs, mid modern century stuff. Lorgans items are a tad too "common", for lack of a better word, because I can find the items cheaper elsewhere.

I bought some of my dining chairs and my sofa from Pomelo. I'm making my ID work with what I have bought! Hahaha.

Btw, the next Bludot shipment will come in mid August (with my items!), in case you do want to get anything Pomelo doesn't have on hand, do let Pomelo know early. I just missed their last shipment. The prices for Bludot are not as steep as I think it would be.

Will you be going to BKK soon? I've seen furniture places at Chatuchak and Suan Lum night market previously.

From my recollection, the designs are craftmanship are pretty ok. Won't be surprised if I see a lot of stuff I see at Lush or Motto there.

Do take a look when you're there and keep me updated. I think the Hawaii 5-0 stuff can buy also if not too expensive.

I know some of the shops there offer shipping back here; one of my friends has done it before. Will try to get more details.

Do you have pictures of the pieces that you bought? I like the simple white powder coated dining table in their showroom.

Plain simple and nice. Some of the dining chairs there I liked were not for sale yet - but they were pretty cool.

There was a pair of black and white chairs, the base was kind of "slightly broken" at an angle for your butt to rest on.

Very nice, and pretty comfortable. Let me go how things go for you. Will be keen to check out your purchases if possible :)

Have you got your TV?

Just thought that Plasma emits heat unlike LED , so you're better off with a LED

Going in the first week of August. Do you know which shops your friend went to? We've shortlisted a few, but so far we're looking at easy to carry back items, have not really looked at bulky items like tables etc.
