Grilles

I am hoping to install some window & balcony grilles in our apartment for safety, but also want them to look aesthetically pleasing as well.

I find a lot of iron grilles look a bit old fashioned -

alternatives will be invisible grilles, or

wooden grilles with lattice / design patterns that can open / close and look good at the same time as well.

Any one have any recommendations?

However I am a bit worried whether wooden grilles won't last long in harsh / humid outdoors.
