The Best Journey Always Leads Us Home

Recommended Posts

No youtube at work so I think I am spared the assault by both of you :P.

If you can take a pic or two then I may be able to offer some suggestions but would need to see it first.

Okay, this is what we'll have to contend with living with:

No one knows why this is happening with our place as they said they've never encountered such problems...

[Wall pics]

Looks like the plaster mix was too wet and so you have the ripples. Also looks like the painting was done when the previous coat was still wet. Did they let the plaster dry properly and then seal it before painting ?.

A pic of the whole wall with the area affected would be good to give a scope of the issue.

[Light switch pics]

Ok, firstly, the light switch covers should be removed for plastering so the plaster doesn't spoil them.

For the light switches it should be easy to fix.

1. Remove the light switch cover.

2. Sand the area around the switch.

3. Fill any indentations and wait for it to dry.

4. Rub down with sandpaper to give a smooth finish if needed.

5. Apply sealer to stop the paint soaking in to the plaster.

6. Paint, usually 3 coats making sure the underlying coat goes off before the next is put on.

The sanding will be a problem as it will generate dust. There are ways of trapping the dust (clear plastic bag with the sanding block inside taped to the wall to create a sealed area) to minimise the effects.

Personally both look like the result of a half-arsed job. Rushed and without care. Paint too quick before dry to rush job (possibly due to Dragon Lady blow her top ;) ).

I can take a look if I come over at the weekend as it should not be too hard to rectify but may take more than one day in order for stuff to dry before painting.

The aftermath of the Dragon Lady led to a 3 day wait of the plaster to be dried before they came over to do a full touch up paint job again?

I know it was a rushed job at first because they came at 4:30pm and then later explained it was because the plaster wasn't dry (/cue Dragon Lady). Sigh, I don't know why anymore. They took 6hrs for the 3rd touch-up job too. So the errant walls have been painted 5 times~

I'll do what I can with the switches but am not so confident about the walls. Will have to ask for the paint back if I want to do my own touching up as they took them away and I don't know which xxx White is used for which area.

That is more of my fault than theirs. We only had the worst walls plastered in the beginning, because I had no idea that the painting wouldn't rectify the bad walls. I thought that it would cover most of it. After the final paint job, I found it unacceptable and coughed up extra for the plaster, and by then, all the switches and everything else was already installed.

They used masking tape I think, but I don't know why the caking up is so bad, maybe I'll just try to scrape it off...

Ans was the plaster wavey like the wall picture 2 before they painted because it looks to me like the plaster was too wet and so has sagged. Did a proper plasterer come in and do the work or was it the painters ?. 3 days for the plaster to dry is really a long time. A couple of days maybe. Again this indicates too much water in the plaster mixture.

Painted 5 times doesn't make up for a bad job the first or second time. The first wall pic is clearly showing where patches of paint has been pealed off as it was semi dry and had not adhered to the wall properly. The smearing in the third wall pic is where the plaster is wet and soft and so a top layer has smeared and been pushed around.

I'm going to leave it as I think they'd would only make it worse. Besides, I really cannot take the dust and debris and plaster and chemicals anymore. Still disappointed with the painting but am more daunted by the mess. Seems a shame really, to have put in so much money and effort into the reno, and to have the blotched painting spoil the whole look. :(

Had a professional plaster guy come in, who did the plastering over 3 days. The painting guys came in the next day and perhaps the plaster wasn't completely dry yet as you said (however, the painting of the last day of plastering is acceptable). Then Dragon Lady episode, and the painters sanded and scraped off the bubbles and re-plastered the marred areas, waited 3 days then redid the whole thing.

DAY 100

Today is major clean day - after my coffee/computer ritual, as ALL my boxes are now unpacked. Hurrah! Finally got through the last of the them yesterday. DIY and networking (head hurts just thinking about it) starts tomorrow - one decal is up (thanks to my ID) so waiting for him to do my other decals haha! My really nice ID offered to do all my decals and some of the DIY I was planning to do myself.

Hommage will deliver the rectified bar table tomorrow, and hopefully, today, my brand new Mit compressor gets fixed. Balmy nights don't sit well with me :( My fans are not fancy (not sure why I was so nonchalant about picking the fans) but their acrylic blades work really well. After a while, the fans do grow on you and I find it suits the home well.

May have pics this weekend if time permits. :)

Cool, if your set then good.... until that Virgo gets the best of you :P. You knwo how to get in contact if you change your mind later.

You do realise that 'if time permits' caveat is moot and there will be scores of people sitting in front of their computers all weekend hitting [F5] every 5 minutes..... :D. Ok maybe not so bad but everyone is waiting in eager anticipation.

(whisper) I would have got the pics and then surprised everyone cos now you may have to deal with the complaints if you are unable to come through. ;) (/whisper)

Looking for ward to the pics :D.

I'll deliberately post at 11:58pm Sunday !

Art not here yet so am reluctant to take pics but will because I know my boring T-Blog lacks pics! All my decals are up, thanks to my ID who so heart-wrenchingly took the pains to affix all my decals while I was cleaning the house today. Even brought his irresistibly-cute daughter over to play with the pets. The decals should be ready by the weekend, and that's when the pics will be taken.

Much <3 to Dad & Mom today, who bought me a steamboat and all the ingredients so we could have our first home-cooked meal. It was to appease my fears of the howling dog and wailing toddler as the elders believe a home-cooked meal signifies and bonds the house-owners to the home. So immensely touched. My parents really dote on me and I'm so lucky I'm so loved. Dad even went to some geomancer to get some stuff because my above-mentioned superstitions, with very strict instructions (timing, facing, placement etc). He even came prepared with a compass! Very, very touched by his concern, but ugh it doesn't suit my decor at all! :P Will try to disguise them best I can. I think peace of mind trumps decor though.

Haven't had time to make the trip to Ikea and Daiso but will try to this weekend. Also need to assemble all the lamps I bought online.

I'll have Phase One pics, then add more later as the additions come in and installed. We haven't even pasted our unit number!

Thanks Adi, I feel much better now after a trip to the doc's. Many have recommended TCM but haven't tried it yet. Even the plaster guy said that I looked really weak and should try TCM - wow, great boost to the confidence. Definitely not looking my best atm but this phase will pass, like all the others and should probably start working out soon too. Haven't had a decent workout in a month.

Still waiting for the final art pieces and such, then the shelf partition with my books and knick-knacks, and hopefully, the common bedroom will be finally rid of the outstanding boxes.

Yeah I have not been since Nov after coming back from London. Even found a gym with punch bags to train at whilst over there. Due to my wifes pregnancy I have not been able to go. Another month and hopefully I can get back in to the routine. Gotta sort the diet out again as well. No more fast food....... :D.

Ely, it took us 2 months after we moved in before we put a unit number sign up. We have quite a few calls from food delivery people when we ordered dinner online as they were not sure which unit it was. Didn't help that we forgot to update our address one time, luckily our new unit is pretty close to our old one, and until recently we made a mistake and had the new block with the correct floor but the old units unit number. Took a while to work out why people kept on calling.

We put up a basic unit number sign but also have a placard one the front door which I will take a snap of and we are getting my parents to bring over a metal placard when they come over of this for the front of the unit.

Buying from here. They have lots of dog and cat and assorted animal ones :D.
