The Aspen Journal

Recommended Posts

After months of researching and reading through the various blogs around, it's finally my turn to start one..

The journey started end August 2010 when my girlfriend and I signed the option to purchase. From then, the hunt for an interior designer began.

My girl wanted a classic theme while I wanted a more modern theme. I shudder at the thought of returning home to a house full of curvy french furnitures with curvy corners and pink walls! (ok.. stereotype thinking).. So in the end we compromised and settled for a more modern classic theme.. Though, I think it's more modern than classic.. Yay me!! :D

We went to a total of 6 ID Firms.

• Interior Library - Too over the top. Plus, they charge a base of $3K just for the designing. Didn't follow up with them after that.

• Earnest - ID gave us a confident aura.. However, their quotes were rather on the high side.. And somehow, the ID gave us a rather arrogant aura..

• Rheiss Interior - Had my reservations about the ID due to his rather aggressive/ salesman personality to him.. However, after a few more meetings, we got more comfortable with him. Also, reading other peoples experiences with him gave us more confident in his work.

• ID Note - ID was friendly. But based on the first meeting, he doesn't seem to understand what we want.

• Plush Living - one of our shortlisted ID's.. However, she wasn't able to deliver the quotations on time despite several reminders and herself committing to it.. Somehow doesn't seem as experienced either..

• Modern Home Interior Design - Passed by this ID on the way to our new place and decided to check it out.. ID seems knowledgeable .. However, he was also very young and does not seem to have many projects under him based on our discussion..

In the end, we decided to settle for the one whom we felt most comfortable with, i.e. Rheiss Interior. :) Hopefully the experience will be smooth.. :jammin:

Renovation work only expected to begin after CNY though. :(

Original floor plan of my unit

Originalfloorplan.jpg

When I got the unit, it was in a REALLY shabby position. Previous owner and his family did not even maintain the unit at all. No renovation was done and it was VERY poorly maintained. Sigh. The whole kitchen cabinets are oil stained and falling apart! Marble flooring was slightly scratched up.

On the day we got the keys, we realised things got worst! They did not even bother to clean the house at all. Toilet had stuffs growing in it. The planter in the roof garden was covered by some tiles and beneath it, it was wet and had rotten woods in it. WTH. But anyways, cleaned those up before the reno cos just couldn't stand the sight of it.. Lol

Floor plan of my unit after reno <drawings not exactly up to scale due to my lack of floorplanner skills>

Just a little teaser, the major renovation would be on the outside roof garden area which will be enclosed and subsequently converted into a walk in wardrobe. :D And then there's the renovation of the entire kitchen area. The floor tiles had black stains all over.. Was thinking of demolishing the kitchen toilet to put a washer and dryer in it. Any comments?

Aside from that, there will be a mirrored feature wall by the dining, a living room tv feature wall, bedroom tv feature wall and feature wall as headboard. The balcony area will be decked with chengai wood. Lastly, of course false ceiling for mbr and living.

3D Pics will follow soon! :D

Oh, on a side note, just proposed to my girl yesterday (22/2/2011)

Question: How many photos are you allowed to upload at one go??

Dining - before <Silly me did not take a photo of the dining prior to commencement of the reno. So this will do!! :P

Dining - After

Don't have a nice comparison for kitchen.. So just the after will do.. :P

And lastly, the outdoor jacuzzi area

No 3D after pics though.. :bangwall:

Oh, see the trench at the left side? That was previously covered by loose tiles.. Previous owner placed some pots on top of them.. When we went in, we removed the tiles and was shocked to see a few pieces of moldy, wet wooden planks in there, moss growing all over and also a cockroach!! :curse: Stupid ex-owners 8|

Guess you have a point.. But I feel that classic themed is more suited when you have a huge home.. Small homes with classic theme will just make it look cluttered and messy.. In my opinion anyways.. :P

Mmm.. Difficult to say.. Cos it depends on what exactly are you doing.. It's best to get multiple quotes from contractors/IDs.. Then based on the quotes, get a comparison here?

Btw, updates on 2nd post above.

how are you enclosing the roof garden? if it is totally enclosed, the MCST may stop you from doing so because (1) it affects the facade of the building; and (2) it may cause the GFA of the development to be exceeded.

also, not sure if you can change the position of the WC so drastically.

Congrats in getting your 1st home, to build as lively nest with your girl. I am sure she says yes... Haha....

I think you have to check with condo mgmt whether you are allowed to change something outdoor to enclosed area. Like what epigram said, condo have restrictions too.
