senocs 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2011 hi everyone, my HDB flat has window grilles facing a common corridor. The window grilles have a keyed lock (i.e. can be locked with a key) but my mum is concerned that the lock is quite generic and therefore either very easy to pick, or common key sets exist (i.e. there may be other people with the exact same key which can open the lock). My initial thought is therefore to buy another, if possible, more secure lock to additionally lock the window grilles. Perhaps one that is pick-proof. Any suggestions on my problem ? Or suggestions where to get grille locks ? Thanks.
neubie 2 Report post Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) No amount of deterrent measures can stop burglar from intrusion if the crook is bent on entering ur premises. Make the lock too strong, thief will break sumthing else that is easier for entry. So dun worry too much. Get a stronger lock which will slow down or delay intrusion. But it'll never be foolproof. We never undo the grille locks. There are two window locks (built in to the windows) and two grille locks (built in to the grille). Btw these grilles that I have facing the corridor are stainless steel grilles, not the usual aluminium ones that we install for the room windows. If you are really worried, you can put a padlock on the grille so that it cannot be opened - guess that should help to a certain extent? The ex-owner of my place had something like 3-4 padlocks on the stainless steel grille!
MichaelAng 1 Report post Posted February 11, 2011 The normal alluminum type of grilles won't deter any type of burglar to be honest. They are so **** soft... can even bend using bare hand. The main purpose of those is to prevent kids from climbing over it. Installing iron wrought ones are the best but are expensive and unsightly. I installed alarm at all possible windows and doors that has a risk. It wont prevent but once activated, it would give the burglar a good scare and prevent him from doing anything more. Soichiro 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2011 Many sliding windows and window grilles can easily be opened from outside if you just use the default lock on the grilles. No tools required, no super human strength too. Just a bit of physics, and both window and grilles can be opened in seconds. I installed extra locks against that loophole.. but can't help wondering if kena carrot chop.. heh
