Led Strips As Cove Light

Good technical info arowana. I understand a reasonable brightness is about 500-600 lumen if you are working in office. I suppose LED light can work as a support light/secondary light... when watching TV or relaxing. Btw, I chance upon a E27 LED that is 5W but pretty powerful compare to those energy saving CFL type. I have asked my friend to get ma 1 and will try it out on exisitng home chandaliar to share with you guys my findings... definitely much cheaper than those philips one and it comes with UL/CE approval..... lets see if this works.... if it does...my new home will be using all these LED downlight as well as LED strip......

For the benefit of those who want to see how using LED strips instead of normal T5 as cove lighting.

Previously I have been searching all over the forum but none can give any help.

Just go ahead with the trial and error and it turns out to be too good! Not as bright as T5 but bright enough.

The color here is warm white (3000K), LED size: 3528 90LEDs per meter. Uses 2x 12V 2.5A and 2x 12V 5A adaptor.

Hi, sorry to dig up this post, but i am actually considering a similar design as yours wit cove light in ceiling fan.

Wouldnt it cast ur ceiling fan shadow beneath? or some flickering?

Plus it comes with 2 year warranty and IR remote control which can change color about 15 different colours based on RGB.. Seems pretty awesome and the pics look great. Says that application is for cove lighting, concealed lighting etc.. Was thinking of using for cove lighting and my platform at the edge..

My question is can you cut the LED strip if you do not require the full length?

yes you can cut the LED if you do not require the full length. You should go to www.dealextreme.com it's cheaper.

If you want to use it more for cove lighting, get those that are single color only. The RGB - changing color kind is cute and nice but more for decorative effect, because the color is not truly representative of the actual color.

There are also 2 main kinds of LED diodes being sold in the market outside there - 3528smd and 5050smd. 3528smd is a dimmer version and only consumes 0.08W of energy whilst the 5050smd consumes 0.24W/LED.of course more energy consumed, the brighter it would be.

Recently I have just bought 15m of waterproof, 60 led/m 5050 LED strip @ ~S$230 online. As I need them at 5 different locations of various length, the supplier helps to cut them into the specific length that I provided from the original roll (note that each roll is 5m). Then they matched the 5 strips each with a remote control (changing of colors and mood) and power supply. Can't wait to have them install by the electrician....

I don't so I requested the on-line vendor to do for me and they gladly obliged with my request. And I just have to give them all the measurements and they cut the strips and re-connect for me.

this is how mine looks like..

lights are supposed to be ware white color (doesn't show in picture). SMD5050 higher grade (brighter) LED than conventional SMD5050. Each LED is producing about 16Lm/LED, compared to normal 12Lm. I dun have any apparatus to measure but I put both typs of leds side by side and light it up. There's a difference for sure.

Total length of the light strips are 30-35m.

60 led /m for 5050 is very bright. but is using constant voltage of 12v or 24vdc?

the waterproof type is eproxy? sleeve or tube type?

However I see most vendors are selling 5m each roll on ebay. I need 10m continuous strips but bend 90 degrees. Can bros who have done this advise whats the best way to join them up? Also I cannot determine the rating of the transformers to get. I understand I need to get a separate transformer for each length. Can someone share what should I get?

Dear bro,

Base from specification this LED ribbon is common found in the market.

Led ribbon is running on constant voltage and not constant current.

Yr LED ribbon is eproxy?

Imagine, per metre is 1.2A and voltage is 12vdc.

Back to techincal: Power = Voltage x Current

therefore Power = 12vdc x 1.2A = 14.4W

Yr LED height(surface) is 1cm, is not recommend. For better one is 1.2cm.

Yr current is very high per metre.

for 5 metre is 6A. Yr LED ribbon will get hot faster and surface unable to dissipate heat fast.

In the long run, LED will spoil easily.

Per metre = 14.4 W

5 M = 14.4W x 5m = 72W

10M = 144W

To buy power supply, please give some allowance of 20% on top of 144W.

Should buy 200W – 12vdc power supply.

How to do connection?

Method 1:

5M---- PS(power supply) ----5M (Dun need to do loop back)

Mehod 2:

PS(power supply) ----5M ----5M (After which do a loop back to power supply)

If u use 24vdc is different story.

Power = Voltage x Current

14.4W = 24Vdc X Current

Current = 0.6A

Current is less by half and LED won’t heat up so fast.

IMHO: Since you have bought it, just use it.

Your cove light is nice, why is it that not many consider using LED for downlights too

Looking into LED lights too for my new flat...and really hoping to make my home an environmental friendly one...went sim lim and price there is ok/reasonable at about $20 per meter..and according to shop attendent, it does not generate any heat as it it DC operated..quite impressed and almost going to confirm with them but luckily I did not. Just attended a housewarming ... and saw the LED strip lights used in my friend's place too, they place it below kitchen cabinet and in their master bedroom.... very impressive.......managed to get the contact of the supplier(hurray)......

Spoke to the contractor and understand they have the different types of waterproofing IP code depending on where I am going to place it. Every LED strip needs a power adapter/transformer... and some has RGB type like mood lights. Confused with so many different types.... anyway ask for a quotation and this is what he quoted me and please share if this is reasonable price.

5M LED strip light warm white c/w power supply/ transformer & 3M double side tape but not water proof type $60

5M LED strip RGB c/w power supply, remote controller & 3M double side tape but not waterproof type $90

Not inclusive of installation... cos he said the electrical contractor just need to link the power cable and it will work already... just need to lay the LED strip to where I want and take out the double side tape... sounds easy ya.

the LED all running at 12vdc. The warm white ones are 3528 model running 60 LED per meter. He highlighted that there are cheaper ones that run at 30 LED per meter. The led type/size is 3528

The rgb ones using 5050 led and c/w 12vdc transformer, IR transmitter for 12 channel(12 different colours) and wireless receiver. It has 60 LED per meter too which means 300LED for 5 meters.

DO u think the price is reasonable for the specifications stated? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
