B&w Mt30 + Onkyo Tx-nr708

Recommended Posts

I have decided on the B&W MT30 + Onkyo TX-NR708 for my entertainment room.

Where can I find the best place to buy it?

Does it make sense to just buy the B&W MT30 from one shop and Onkyo 708 from another if they cost cheaper individually rather than the "packaged price" offered by 1-2 shops I came across.

Thanks!

hey hi! u post on xtreme forum too right? hmmm.. have you tested the MT-30 before? do try to go audition another few more different setups from other makes because at that price range, there are plenty of options.. ;)

anyway think B&W currently only have one distributor, Experts Group, if i not mistaken.. here is the link http://www.theexperts.com.sg

If you are getting from them, its definitely cheaper to get your receiver from another place as they don't give bundle price. anyway i think they do not carry onkyo, but i might be mistaken, give them a call to confirm ya!

Yah, posted on xtreme forum cos not getting any response here;)

I auditioned MT30 and a few other setups in Adelphi...well...the WAF is a major decision swinging factor ;)

I managed to get a cheaper price compared to quote from Experts Group...they are super stiff and un-accommodating in their pricing. :(

So I will be getting the amplifier and MT30 delivered without installation... so I will need to get belden cables for my ID to run for the 5.1 setup now.

:P

Hi

Congrats. B&W is awesome speakers.

My question, why Onkyo 708?

Next, though Im very impressed with the PV-1 sub, its rather overpriced. A velodyne or Paradigm sub would suffice without any quality degarde & its much cheaper. But thats my opinion.

The MT25/30 are using basically M1 speakers. I would recommend the 600 series to have a more fuller audio. But if u like sat speakers, then enjoy them.

cheers

What abt the yamaha 1065? Your B&W will serve u real well. Though I would suggest you change your sub. B&W subs craps big time except

the PV1.

forgot to add ill be using panasonic 50VT20s. would that matter for HT amp choice vicenzo?

Not really. Are you investing in a bluray player? If it is, either you get a good BR player (eg OPPO83) or a good

amp with good video upscaling eg Onkyo 708 & above.

For such a big screen, watching DVDs is crap quality according to my own eyes.

Cheers

Well, one of the reason is because my entertainment room is pretty small and WAF is pretty strong here.....

As both of us are not hardcore audiophile, so a decent sounding unit with wide capability to handle movies, gamings and music is sufficient.

so far we both like what we hear from the MT30 setup... Maybe the 600 series sounds better but what we don't know wouldn't hurt that much :P maybe I can upgrade to a pair of front speakers from the 600/CM series when i upgrade in the future? :thumbs up:

The design of the PV1 is a piece of art by itself....well ..seem like my wife rather I spend more on the MT30 than the more popular and cheaper DefTech speakers/Velodyne sub combination.....it is pretty rare for her to want to spend more on a piece of non-fashion related stuff

I initially wanted to go for onkyo 608 but decided to go for 708 for it's additional networking capability, better video upscale? and ability to auto-calibrate all 5.1 speakers (am I right?)

oh yah, what specification of belden cables should i purchase for my MT1 speakers?

what sort of connection should i use? bare wire or should i crimp some sort of connectors myself?

If crimping myself, what are the tools for the type of connectors used.

thanks!

Ive said this a million times so plus 1 more time, again.

One cannot compromise WAF with quality. No point paying so much for a PV-1 when a cheaper Velodyne will do the job. Btw, the velodyne has a good WAF, it comes with a remote control & has more devices to play with to get the sweet spot. Its absolutely brilliant!

Yes, the 708 has multi EQ calibration as compared to the 608.

On a serious note, CM series is reserved for audiophilers & wont be appropriate for movie watching. The 600 or 800 series would be a perfect balance.

cheers

I do agree with you not compromising on quality.

But as you said, PV1 is pretty good quality stuff albeit at premium pricing. So, strictly speaking, I am not compromising on sound quality....just paying more to make my wife happier and make my life easier ;) *anyway, i got the MT30 at a few small hundreds off the RRP...so more incentive for me to go for it*

We saw the velodyne at KEC....sadly my wife was not impressed with the aesthetic as it still conforms to the standard subwoofer squarish, black box.

I know you meant well with your advice and I really understand where you are coming from..but sometimes marriage life is easier with couples giving and taking along the way :D

Hahah. Well noted.

My missus has no say in my decision to get a HTS as Im paying for it and she's not :P

In the beginning she did protest with all the ugly looking equipments, but when we had a house warming, all her gf's with their respective other halves were well impressed with the audio/video quality of my AV equipment. Much so that I was "requested" to help/advice them set up a proper HTS at their place.

And HTS is what its all about. Sonically sweet sound & crisp clear image. Wife & me never stepped into the cinema since.

So all's well that ends well.

Cheers
