Polishing Compressed Marble

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just gotten a resale and in the midst of selecting an ID. So far, I have seen like 6 IDs and 5 of them have recommended me to just polish the exisiting compressed marble in my living and dining to save cost. The current state of the floor is very dull and there are some cracks on 1 or 2 tiles. 5 of the IDs advised that after polishing, the compressed marble will be very shiny.

However, one of the IDs says that the results after polishing may not turn out too good. He says that only the marble composite will shine and the rest will be just as dull. He has done another unit and the results were not ideal despite doing it twice.

Hence, I am now deciding to polish or to hack. I kinda like compressed marble as there are no grout lines and feels cooling. At the same time, it can save me quite a sum of money if I choose not to hack. However, I am worried that the results may not good after polishing as mentioned by the last ID. Don't want to spend close to $1k and end up getting unsatisfactory results.

I understand that if I hack and lay homo tiles, the maintenance is easier compared to compressed marble. However, the grout lines will turn black over time. In a dilemna now.....

Please share your thoughts. Any advice will be greated appreciated. Thanks!!

i had compressed marble for the flooring in my previous home and had it polished before moving in. The result was not good. The id who said that only your marble composite will shine and not the rest is correct from my experience. After having it polished it still looked very dull. If you really like the shiny effect, then you may want to seriously consider replacing the marble.

Oh yes, one more thing. these days the grouting lines for homogenous tiles are actually quite thin and not as conspicuous. As for them turning black over time, well, my parents have had theirs for several years and the grouting lines have not turned black. I think if it's in the bathroom where mositure is hihg there's a higher chance of that happening, but for yor living room, as long as you mop or vacuum the floor regularly, it shouldn't be much of an issue.
