we bought our furnitures almost 3 mths in advance. The shops allow us to do that with no additional storage charge.

As for electrical items, we shopped around and took down measurements of items we want and gave them to our ID. (hob/hood, fridge, washing machine & dryer)

After the reno schedule was out, he advised us the date for delivery of kitchen hob/hood then we went to buy the stuff.

We arranged for hob & hood to be delivered first due to the kitchen cabinet. The rest to be delivered after reno done.

Toilet accessories shopping is done but nothing bought coz pending recommended measurements from the ID.

personal opinion and my own course of action:

if engaging a real ID for ur reno, den dun buy anything 1st before u finalise ur design theme & concept wif ur ID. Else u could end up spending a few thousands on stuff whose design might not go wif ur eventual reno design scheme and end up spoiling whatever u spent on ur reno. it's like buying a 2k item to destroy a 30k-40k design.

if using typical contractor who just basically builds stuff for u and not too concerned abt real design themes and concepts, den u can more or less just buy watever u like, whenever u want.

to a real interior designer worth his salt, who sticks to his guns on the intended design theme & concept, even the design of a little faucet (aka tap, mixer etc) matters when it comes to matching to a certain design theme for the house. everything must work together to pull it off and the sum of the parts, in this case, is usually more than the total value of the individual parts combined.

If stocks are low and you want to secure it, you may get it before the reno. Just have to ensure that the vendor can help to store the stocks. Also, for items such as sofa, the vendor may not have existing stock and would require the factory to produce them which will take about 1+ months or so. Thus, its always good to recce for items before hand and collect their measurements for the ID to work on. Items such as bed frame, sofa, fridge, washer, dryer, TV, Home theater system, DVD player, would need to be recce beforehand so that you can work in their dimensions during reno. Other items such as aircon, lightings, etc can be recce during reno stage

I prefer to buy the furniture first as they will set the theme (and colour scheme) for the design, so you will be assured that everything looks cohesive. Also, it's much easier to ask the ID/contractor to build to a specific measurement as opposed to looking for a piece of furniture that is exactly in the dimensions that you want. Most furniture companies can hold your purchase for a few months before delivery. European imported furniture has a 4 month waiting time (unless there's ready stock).. so it's better to get them before the reno.

Electronics should be the least of your worries, there are so many electronic supplies in SG with lots of stock... However if you have built-in appliances, then it's better to decide what you want to do so that you have the dimensions to design the space accordingly.
