Should I Break This Build In Wardrobe? Is It Possible To Repaint It Myself To Make It Look New?

my contractor says it's not possible to repaint the cupboard myself as the paint won't 吃。is this true? or is there some kinda special paint i can use?

i'm thinking of painting it over and changing the handles to metal to save cost.

Yup. the paint won't hold on evenly to the laminate. You see ugly patches all over, unless you willing to paint primer layer over it first, and then maybe 2-3 coats of your desired colors, then maybe still can make an even color. Why not ask carpentry to re-do just the door with a new laminate of your choice? It gives it a fresh feel.
