neubie 2 Report post Posted July 10, 2010 does that mea a blu ray player can play dvds, but not the other way round? just like dvd player is able to play vcds last time from old to new technology..... VHS > VCD > DVD > BluRay... yes you are right, BluRay (BD) players can playback DVD format (backward compatible), but DVD dun recognise BD format. anyway, BD discs are very expensive, and no cheong copies in the market yet, so not worth to buy BD player at this time. pocus 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 (edited) If you are buying a DVD player, dun need to crack your brain, most DVD players in the market are ok as long as you buy established brands from Japan or Korea. Dun bother HDMI outputs unless you are a cable freak who like neat cables. The image quality from HDMI or Component makes no difference for DVD format as DVD resolution is standard TV resolution. As for Blu-ray player, it's explained by neubie. But adding to that, tf you have a HDTV, especially those that boast Full HD in 1080p resolution. It will be a waste without a Blu-Ray player or a game console like PS3 or Xbox360.......(like having an iphone without 3G internet) Even the HD channel 5 from mediocorp is no match for the crystal clear content of a blu-ray disc. BD is expensive if u buy it locally. Whereas if you buy from Amazon US or UK, its as cheap as USD9.99. I bought Red Cliff 1 & 2 from Amazon UK for just GBP7.49 (about $16) Postage charges is standard 10-15% of BD prices. Btw, some local websites in Spore have a very active BD reseller forum. Its just cheap as $15 from some of these sellers. Ive dumped my DVD collection for a song. BD is the way to go. Pix & Audio quality is several notches better than DVD. Havent look back since. RGA/Composite can only upscale DVD to 1080i while HDMI can upscale to 1080p. There is difference but that depends on the chipset of your DVD player. The OPPO983 DVD player uses the VRS video processor & it produces one of the best pix quality using HDMI as compared to using normal RGA/Comp cables.
