Recommendation For A Decent Sound System.

Recommended Posts

There's not much review on this receiver yet. What I really want to find out how is the audio performance from music

listening. I have no problems with the video quality as my own OPPO83 BR player is equipped with the ABT chipset that

does a superb job in video upscaling.

Cheers

OPPO 83 is good stuff! You're right, you only need to find out how the audio performance for music is. Pioneer should be getting the 920 end of this week or early next week for audition. I've not had a chance to plan for a trip to compare both, so i'm tempted to just take pioneer for the Pioneer AV control in iPhone.. by the way, the Pioneer is 100-150 more expensive than the onkyo 608 (i feel this is a premium charged for the new arrival). When i read posts and reviews from the US, Onkyo 608 is more expensive than Pioneer 920! Also in the US reviews i read, it is not fair to compare 920 and 608. Onkyo 608 should be compared to Pioneer 1020, while Pioneer 920 should be compared to Onkyo 508 instead! hmm.... headache..

Bro Congrats.

Onkyo 608 is only 2EQ calibration compliant which means it doesnt calibrate your sub for u. Get the installer to do it.

After installing, do an audio integrity check using the Audessey function of your receiver.

If possible upgrade the LCR speaker cables. Belkin cables is good. rear speakers cables are not so crucial.

After installing, dont be too happy yet. New speakers need time to "burn in" so keep your system going for about 2-3 hours

daily for the 1st 100 hours. Also, keep fiddling with the sub (esp the phase & crossover frequency) to extract the sweet spot

as according to your listening ear.

Def Tech 800/1000 are small speakers so do remember to calibrate it in your receiver to "small speakers"

Other than that, enjoy your HT system.

Cheers

hey vicenzo bro, how does the phase & crossover frequency work on the velodyne sub?

Hi

Rule of thumb, small speakers set phase to 120Hz. Big speakers alternate between 60-100Hz.

Phase is up to u. You try setting it at 0 & toggle between 0-360. I rest my phase at 180/270

After which, let your receiver do the calibration. You should hit the sweet spot.

Btw, dont place the sub against the wall. Give it some space to breathe.

Cheers

SVS is a good choice. Youre thinking of PB10 or 12?

As for receiver choice, its up to the owner. I tend to like Onkyo for its warm sounding. Yamaha is brighter & it compliments well

with DefTech & Tannoy speakers. Im bias against Denon.

Cheers

Hi boss,

Does Onkyo compliments well with Tannoy speakers? also, what sort sub compliments with Onkyo? I am look at the 508 model.

any reason why are u bias against Denon? need your advice before buying. Thank you.

Hi

Tannoy speakers, which model? Revolution? Arena?

Subs. Look no further than SVS, velodyne & Im going to add Paradigm now.

My bias against Denon receiver is my own opinion. U should demo 1st before buying.

Cheers

Thank you Vicenzo.

I am not sure about the model of the Tannoy speakers. I was quoted $250 by KEC. Its pretty small but not the mini type, surface is kind of greyish brown. I will check on the model of the speakers again.

Thanks for the recommendation on the subs. I think KEC recommended me Velodyne for $700.

As for the receiver, I cant differentiate the quality between Denon and Onkyo (im not an expert on this). I am ok with both. Is it true that Onkyo is easier to use than Denon?

Thank you for reply.

Hmm ... for a budget of <$2k would I still get a good deal with specialised audio shops like KEC or am I better off buying off the shelf systems from electrical shops like Courts, Harvey, etc?

Yes, Onkyo is easier set up than Denon, IMHO. Check the Tannoy speakers model. $250 is way too cheap for a adequate system.

Hi

Courts & harvey just sells mass produced hardware. Chances are, the salesmen knows nuts about AV stuff.

Point in contention was when someone in this forum claim that plasma is lousy technology, as an example. This info

was passed down from these salesmen. Of coz, this info is inaccurate.

Specialised shops allows u to demo your preferred AV set up in a proper audio room. And offer expert advice, even to novices.

As a paying customer, u must be well informed before making any purchases. Dont buy base on what the salesman tells u. Buy

only after u auditioned them.

Cheers
