Ok, now if we want to talk about poison..... close your eyes or you may regret it.......

on UK ebay;

TDL studio 10 speakers - originally 500 pounds (S$1200). Old but very good reviews..... 80 pounds (S$180)....

Wharfedale Emerald 95 - 95 being the year to two years younger than my wonderful speakers. The Emeralds were the top of the range line. 80 pounds (S$180)

Ruark Prologue 1 - originally 900 pounds (over S$2k) in 1998 - 295 pounds (S$700).

Even with shipping fees (use borderlinx or the like to reduce them) you can still get a much better speaker for significantly less than buying here. Takes a little more effort and there is a slight risk but to be honest, most people selling on the UK ebay for items like this are pretty honest in my experience of selling camera and hifi there.

Think what you could do with the extra money saved.

Maybe it would be worth clubbing together and buying then just renting shipping space rather than flying it over. Much cheaper. Maybe I should do this and resell in Singapore ;). Maybe, maybe :).

ok,

Last poison for today.

Tannoy Eyris DCC in Sycomore centre speaker - Originally 699 pounds (around S$1700), now brand new (stock clearence) 200 pounds (around S$500) obviously plus postage.

Even at S$700 or so all in for a brand new speaker, I find it hard to think it can be beat at anywhere near that price. Very tempted myself TBH. They don't post internationally but as I still have my UK credit card and a UK address (my poor parents will be pleased :) ) it is feasible.

If you want to do it properly, ask them not to tell you what they are until after you have listened. That way your preconceived ideas about the different brands will be taken out of the picture :) .

If you are looking at 2k on the app and speakers then you try the denon / yamaha 667 / Onkyo 608 with the Tannoy HTS 101, Q Acoustics 2000, Q Acoustics 1010is (the 2000 replaces it but you may be able to get it cheap as it is dicontiued now) or maybe the Wharfedale Diamond 10. The Monitor Audi BR2 may be worth a listen but would probably take you outside the budget.

Any shops to recc for what u recc??I only went kec so far

Muahaha! This is getting so hilarious! :P

I swear the poison is like osmosis or something...

Funny how it's always the guy wondering what the wifey would say when he declares the budget has suddenly risen by another 1k, when I'm the one doing more of the HTS shopping. Thankfully, I have say over the HTS AND my massive wardrobe :P Seriously. From the Def Tech 600 to floorstanding Wharfedale 10.6, from an Onkyo 508 to the 608, from the Oppo 83 to the 93, from the Wharfedale 10.CC to the 10.CS, from a 46" plasma to a 46" 3D LED, from a 40" LCD to a 40" LED, and now - have finally caved to husband's persistent whinging about the CHQ-8T, so we're going to swap that for the SVS SB12-NSD?

SB12nsd_pgb_front_wgrill_300.jpg

Anyone has thoughts on this? I suggested ANOTHER CHT-8Q instead but he seems pretty bent on changing the Velodyne.

Yes, but Ely, I would hazzard a guess that the lady being fully involved in the HTS choice is not that common. Maybe an agreement here or there but to go listening etc .... ;) . Good for you being so pro-active with the choice and getting involved rather than letting hubby call all the shots but actually having some logical (yes, logical for a lady, clearly a rarity :o:P) reasons for saying no rather than the usual "I just don't want too" or "because I am not comfortable with that" (yes I am still talking about buying HiFi :P.

Funnily enough, the guy I went and bought my 18.dfs surround speakers from last night had a top of the line SVS tube sub and it was a beast. Didn't listen to it but it looked very impressive :D.

Can't help much on the choice but to say....... go try them and get what you prefer. Both seem like reasonable choices. Check out user thoughts at avsforum or avforums (linked in earlier posts) to see if there are any issues that may affect you like speaker placement.

Go try, then buy, have fun....

Sadly, he married a geek who used to play MMORPGs and lead guild raids in PvE and PvP, was a beta-tester and guildmistress. Not so sexy. Naturally, this earned me the computer/gadget/networking/software responsibilities. I chose the initial HTS set up based on budget and reviews, but as you can see, it gradually grew to having a life of its own. The husband is happy to research and telling me what sound (pun intended) choices I've made *pats on back which earns me massive wardrobe*, then suggests maybe we should upgrade a "few" components since if the 83 is so awesome, how cool would the 93 be?! You balance performance and budget, yes with a lot of logic, and we decided on the slight ammendments. I'm also building our Blu-Ray collection as we speak! Since I'm busy bidding on more art pieces, I've given him full reign of the SVS vs Velodyne debate. :P

Will definitely research more into speaker placement as we haven't even decided on the couch etc, but the TV area would be about 5m x 5m. Can't wait to play some video catnip and see if kitty becomes a couch potato. He'd definitely be impressed by the TV upgrade (haha! CRT at rental apartment in Australia).

Save some cash, make your own speaker cables :D.

6moons DIY Speaker cables

Don't laugh.....

Audioholics DIY Speaker cable shootout. Not really surprising but braided cat5 beat Monster cable. More surprising is that braided cat5 beat just about everything it was tested against...... now where was my cat6 roll....

I can think of one person probably having a heart attack right now ;).

Oh gawd. That would take me to new heights of geekiness. But it'd be like braiding hair, I guess~

Now, now, everyone knows there are no women on the inter-web-net. As one site expalins it ...... "The internet Where the men are men the women are men and the children are FBI agents" :D.

I never got in to WoW and only really played Hellgate: London (from reading my T-Blog I am sure you aould know why). It was a bit of a surprise after playing the game with someone to have them say... "Have to go now, I have my PSLE tomorrow" :jawdrop: . I met another girl there too but my wife explained to me in very loud words why having any internet contact with girls on anything other than forums is a really bad thing before logging on to MSN and chatting to 20 assorted guys she has in her friends list  .

Upgrading is good but just remember the law of deminishing returns. More you pay (past a certain level), less obvious the benefit.

Take a look here for an idea on speaker placement.

Hi RB, curiously when I went to choose/buy my kit, my wife was heavily involved because (a) we were spending a fair bit of money (b) she didn't want anything functional but hideous © allowed us to play good guy/bad guy with the salesman. I would say how great the system was, wife would look very unconvinced preferring some much cheaper nasty stuff, she would start to walk away, I would look ruefully at the salesman and start my trip to the door and then he would crack open just a little which was then the signal for my wife to swoop on him and cut him to shreds with Olympic class bargaining skills. It was so funny because the salesman was lost as he was used to extolling the merits for this technical feature or that and my wife was telling him she couldn't care less and that it was an ugly box and if she had to have it in her house it was certainly going to be at firesale prices. It was worth it just for all the drama...I'm sure the salesman would run out screaming if he ever saw "she who must be obeyed" walk into his store again :D

Whilst I wouldn't like to to go against common knowledge of all husbands that our wife is always right, looking at the Oppo website it seems the 83 is actually discontinued and replaced by the 93 so your hubby may be right to want to upgrade ;).

Youre a fresh air in this forum. Good on you!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------

For the SVS versus Velodyne debate, I own both these units at home. SVS is probably the better performer sub to sub but pricing is a real long shot. Some may say Hsu or Rthymik are better subs to go, but where can you get them in Spore plus after sales service?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On another note - B&W may be overpriced for some but is probably value for money for some discerning folks.

cheers
