Recommendation For A Decent Sound System.

Recommended Posts

I believe the general advice in this thread is to change the sub to Velodyne, SVS or Paradigm subs.

I was also wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to the 708 from the 608. Initially I was looking at the 508, but OH who was initally a Bose and Soundbar fan has recently been converted by me (thank god!)and is now upping the ante (and budget!) after reading all the Onkyo reviews online. Apparently, the 708 has a lot of upgradable options.

May I ask how to Def Tech 600 sounded with the 608? Would a center speaker procinema 1000 make a difference?

I am currently thinking of the Onkyo 608 + Def Tech 600 + Velodyne CHQ8 + OPPO 80, but am afraid of going to Aldephi and getting poisoned!

Ely, it is advisble to go and audit it yourself. u set a budget and stick to it.

i considered afew thing before i invest on the system.

Beware: it is solely based on personal opinion

AMP: it will depreciated the fastest ( new models every year with more functions) so stick to "your" basic needs or your system's capability.

speaker setup: i want to look for something that it will not depreciate too fast for selling/ upgrading. like 5.1 to 7.1 or 7.2 in the future. great upgradability.

Sorry not much help..

Looking for good contractors? Click here for your request

To get your speakers & sub to have a proper workout, these bluray titles below are recommended-

1) Knowing (the plane crash & the train accident scenes)

2) Sherlock Holmes (good visual esp on plasma, excellent crisp dialogue)

3) King Kong-most of the action scenes

4) Master & Commander - a good reference movie for tight bass

5) Toy Story 1 & 2- fantastic pix & audio is brilliant

6) 2012

cheers

Hi guys,

I just went down to Adelphi to audition some speakers. I tested the Wharfedale Diamond 10HCP, Tannoy Arena, Def Tech Pro cinema 1000, Boston acoustics and Tannoy DC6T. All these speakers range from sat to floor standing. Of all, I love the sound from Tannoy DC6T the most with only 2.1 stereo. As mentioned in my previous thread, I am looking for a system that can bring out the music more than movies sound. Alan from KEC quoted me the followings:

Speakers: Tannoy DC6T (2.1) w/o center spkr - $2850

Onkyo 608 - $750

Velodyne sub CHT8Q - $799

Instal & calibration - $80

Optional Cyrus 8xP audio amp - $3100

He told me that the sys without the amp will sound different and not as good. Honestly, the overall of 7500 shot way above my budget of 4k. But I really like the sound, can someone give me some advice and is the a/m quote reasonable? Is KEF speakers better than Tannoy within the same price range (KEF closed for holiday)? Thinking of going down again tomorrow, pls advice. Tks

hi guys,

ok, i am now thinking of either of these 2 AVRs to go with (likely) B+W speakers (CM5, CMC, 2xM1 surround, PV1)

Yamaha RX-V567 or

Onkyo 708

I've looked through the specs, both seem to provide for bi-amping, but more power from the 708 (110W x 7) vs 567 (90W x 7)

I have tried the yamaha receiver with my intended B+W speakers (love it), but not the Onkyo.

My next consideration is video upscaling/upconversion - i am planning on getting a projector instead of LCD tv.

Not decided which Bluray player yet, but for sure i will have DVD, starhub/mio tv.

Which is better? Onkyo uses DCDi for upscaling, not sure about the Yamaha upscaling chipset.

The 708 is considerably higher priced than the 567, so is the $$ worth while?

Any views? Or any other recommendations?

I would go for the Onkyo amp , but really depends what you want . Features or power ?

thanks, the onkyo amp seems to have better features AND power.

The 708 supposedly is 130W per channel. B+W recommend 120W max for CM5 and CMC, and 100W for M1.

Does this mean the 708 is over-powered for my speakers? Any potential damage to the speakers?

I even thought of bi-amping, does this actually increase the power output to the speakers?

Any one got feedback on how the Onkyo works with the CM5/CMC? Anywhere I can test?

Still can't decide btw the Yamaha 567 or the 708.

Hi Woodydodo,

Just my personal opinon, i would rather wait for two months to get SVS . But it really boils down on whether which sound you prefer SVS or Velo Subs. Thks

I tried both yest. The SVS seem to be a better choice as the punch is tigher than the velo one (IMO).

Hi,

I am quite new here. Just buy a resale 5rm and planning to make one common room as entertainment room.

So, now checking some HT systems. Mostly for movie and gaming.

My budget is not so high, about 1.5k to 2k.

I just saw a Pioneer Todoroki system @ Best Denki, its PHT-77T, consist of VSX 820 receiver, HTP-RS77 todoroki 5 speaker system and S-RS3SW - 200w active subwoofer. The price is only $1,200. I am thinking of top up $200 to change the receiver to VSX 920 but use the same speakers system.

Here is the link

Any comments from any expert here?? can't find proper review.

Thanks
