Driveway & Car Porch Tiles

Recommended Posts

What tiles would be suitable for driveway and carporch area?

Some said its homogenuous, while others say granite, or ceramic. I am not keen on slate tiles as it flakes easily.

Would appreciate any homeowners' advise and experience. Thank you.

You can try pebble wash with homogenous tiles.

My pebblewash... sigh.. algae keen growing, cos well shaded from the sun, and have plenty of plants. Can't use acid or clorox to wash, as the grass/plants bordering the driveway will die. End up have to pressure jet every 6 months.

Those nice pebblewash floors usually have no plants and get full sun.

If given a choice again, I wld be using these clinker tiles.

Basically, they are 100mm X 100mmX 12mm thick homogeneous textured tiles. And I wld mix with some long granite slabs in some horizontal line patterns, like ION driveway.

Pebblewash stain very easily and hard to clean .. overtime, for those patches that are well-used, it will have a darker shade than others ...

Most will use heavy duty homogenous tiles or ceramic ...

Granite might be too slippery ...

Thanks all. Reckon will give up on the idea of pebblewash.

Granite with textured surface are great for outdoor areas, except for car porch as any oil leaks will permanently stain the tiles.

Heavy duty homogenous tiles sounds like the best option. Will probably go for running tone homogenous tiles.

Do we need full body homogenous tiles? The newer homogenous tiles (also known as porcelain tiles) are usually not full body.

Granite not necessarily bad. Those dark coloured ones.. even if kena oil stain, will not be easily visible. Put it this way, oil is penetrating. Even if use high gloss homogeous tile, if left overnite, the oil will still stain through. The solution is to choose a colour that is similar to effect of an oil stain.

Porcelain tiles are basically tiles that have an added layer to get the desire texture/look. Not meant for heavy duty use.

Actually, there are not many homogeneous tiles meant for driveway, as they have to be thick.

If the tiler did not put 100% tile adhesive below, then high chance the corners will crack off.

Yes, understand that tile adhesive must cover the entire tile before laying. Some contractors will shortcut and only apply at the corners.

The existing car porch is with interlock brick tiles. Very solid, except that a portion is sunken. Still thinking whether to replace it or top up the sunken portion. Not the prettiest but serve its purpose well.

Tiler shortcut is put adhesive in the middle, and press down, no guarantee the adhesive will spread to cover the entire tile. Meticulous tiler will spread adhesive entirely, then press down. But the speed of tiling is substantially different.

Interlocking paver is normally laid on hardcore/granite chip only. There is no RC slab below. If want to tile need to lay full RC mesh first. Since going to spend so much, the tiling cost will be relatively minimal.

Yes, think so that there is no RC slab below. If use back the brick tiles, then will not need the RC mesh and slab. The clinker tiles look interesting but i have not seen it in houses before. Wonder how ION driveway looks? Will make a trip down to take a look at it.

ok the best is granite cobblestone as they can withstand heavy weght even up to a tank

but must choose line chiseled finishes for eaiser mainatance and for friction .

if ceramic , u must get heavy duty ceramic . better from MML
