Does Velvet Sofa Trap Smell, Am Having Open Concept Kitchen. Does It Fray Easily After 3yrs?

i love a fabric sofa, but am having open concept kitchen and thus have some concerns...

1) will velvet sofa trap smell, is it possible to remove the smell using some spray or steam cleaner?

2) what is the live span for velvet material

cant make up my mind to buy leather or the lovely fabric one. as i believe leather will be more durable... pls share your experience. many thanks.
