My Second Home At Fernvale Vista

Recommended Posts

Tue, 5 Oct 2010

It's been a long long time since I last updated the progress here at our new home - we have been really busy, and used up every bit of my energy unpacking stuff - to date, I would say it's 90% complete, at least for my stuff, which consists of like 95% of the house .. LOL! Have been too lazy to take photos of the furnished house, let alone download.

but for now, will start by sharing some pictures of the BIG day - moving day!

We decided to engage the Helping Hands, after reading good reviews from the forum. Besides, it's also good since it's giving these people a second chance. And they did prove to be really deserving of the second chance - well done, guys!

First, our beloved stuff from rental house - the old but still strong fridge, and our 15-yr-old mattress (shows how old I am ... )..

A quick review on the Helping Hands.

- 6 guys came punctually,

- very careful with our belonging esp piano,

- they tried hard to accommodate all in one trip (most other movers have insisted that we need to do ours in 2 trips). In the end, they truly managed to do so, but only with 2 of the movers having to go to destination via cab in order to squeeze in the last few items, which we gladly paid for

- team spirit is great,

- entire move is complete within 2.5 hours

Strongly Recommended :thumbs up:

This is only a fraction of what i had to unpack - many long and sleepless days and nights ..

It's a good thing my living hall furnishing has not arrived, so I can park the stuff there as we unpack each box! So indeed, it's a blessing in disguise that they had to indent the stocks we wanted!

i had them to moved my stuffs too. they came on time, move out very fast. they really took a good care of my stuffs. my family was very much impressed with their great team spirit. they looked out for each other too. great attitude.

for my case, no choice. too many boxes and stuffs event though i reused 30% of my furniture. 2 trips. but on the 2nd trip which was only 1/2 the load and they charged me 1/2 trip base on 1/2 load instead of 2 full trip cost.

the best thing is that my sister also engaged them 2 yrs back. their was 2 full load therefore 2 trips. ask for discount and they adsorbed the GST for them :D there was why my sister recommended this mover to me.

On the same day, we arranged for two big loads of delivery -

1. bedframe

2. girls study room and bedroom furnishing

Both came late, and all arrive at the same time! Panic because it's alot of stuff, all need space to install ..

- 3 bedframes

- 2 wardrobes

- 3 tables

- 2 mattresses

Fortunately, the different groups of installers are all very experienced, and were able to work within the limited space

sorry, this one no pictures yet, will post later once the place is nice nice stage

Review 1 - Bed Frame - Aafrenz

Got my Queen and 2 single bed frames at the Expo, where they had a booth. Generally, the whole experience had been positive. The order was made pretty much in advance, and we returned a few times to have a look at the new bedheads, and material etc, did a few changes, before making the final confirmation of colour and delivery date. All were entertained without question (ie as long as they have not started the production)

Delivery was a little late, but still the installers did what they were supposed to swiftly, and properly bc ours is a mix of colours for the same set of frame. Pictures will show what I mean later.

I'm glad we decided on storage bed frames - these are indeed great for storing away stuff that we don't need often! Already filled up the queen bed frame, now going to attack the girls' ones .. he he

Review 2 - Girls Furnishing - Lilian Construction

This is a little furniture shop tucked in a ulu corner of a housing estate. We happen to chance upon it because it was near the house we rented. What does the name tell you? Some simple trading company, right? Totally not impressed with it initially. Infact, for the girls, we went round many many shops and showrooms - what we wanted were something simple, functional, sturdy yet not too costly. At the moment, the two girls are sharing the two rooms - one for study and one bedroom. We suspect that in a few years, they may each want a room of their own - so such "temporary" furnishing may be the best option.

Somehow, all the other shops have an item that we liked, but not another, but this one - has everything that fits our specs and our bill! After talking to the lady boss, we were directed to their factory/warehouse for more selection. That is where we were really caught by surprise - the boss can even do make to measure study tables, shelves etc. We spent such a long time there, teling him our ideas, and he sketching out the various designs, discarding those he thinks are not workable. Very patient guy, I must say, because it was way past 5.30pm when we arrived!

Despite the attractiveness of the proposals, we still decided to pick up a few off-the-shelf items as their promotional prices are just too good to miss.

Again, though delivery was a little late (and I later learnt that it's bc they was a misunderstanding bc we kept changing the date), all was installed ever so quickly. Within less than an hour, the girls had a new set of everything, and could not wait to do their beds and unpack their books and stuff!

Another good job! Highly recommended! :thumbs up:

Review 3 - Curtains - Mr Chew

Another highly recommended one! From selection, to sewing, to installation, to cleaning up - all beautifully done!

Can't remember if I had mentioned earlier, but on meeting day, Mr Chew came with a trolley full of fabric samples. At first, we were excited bc got so many to choose from, but after looking at a few books, we sort of resigned and asked him to recommend. He will look at the wall colours, floor, furnishing etc and make suggestions - constantly holding up the sample in the sun, and showing different combination of day and night curtain fabric for us to see the effect. Now that the curtains are up, we can tell that he has good colour sense makes good recommendation! The house immediately feel so warm and cosy once the curtains are up!

Not only does he have a good eye for colours, sewing is also immaculately done by Mrs chew. Best of all, on installation day, we do not need to worry about dust - they use a piece of cloth to protect the floor, the drill is connected to a vacuum so all dust get sucked off right off. After everything is done, Mrs Chew removed all remnants, plastic bags etc, so the place is back to its original condition, plus the curtains. This is a plus point for me, bc I absolutely hate those contractors etc that leaves things behind for me to throw.

Good job, Mr and Mrs Chew! :thumbs up:

TV TV on the wall

TV arrived too, much to the excitement of all other 3 members of the family!

First, the samsung team delivered the TVs, then i had to call the installer to come down!?!? When I tried to do so, his phone was off?!?!?! So I had no choice, right? Got to call office to ask .. office must have told him off, bc he retuned my call and asked why I never call him directly?!?!?

anyway, to cut the story short, the TVs were finally installed before the day ended. Phew!

Review 4 - StoreRoom Rack - Yee Sin

Needed the store room rack to be up before we can do any proper packing. Otherwise things just keep being pushed one one place to another - so advice for all is to have that done either towards the end of reno, or to have that done first thing after hand over.

Ours is a "joint effort" by contractor and ourselves - thanks! - he offered us a standard one, but to maximise the store room, we extended it to fit 2 walls, plus added another tier. Also we were fortunate, because another client called to postpone a big order, so boss is able to install for us the day after we confirmed the order! Perfect timing!

Again, the 2 installers are experts - working at lightning speed, and completing the task within less than half an hour. There was great coordination too, for though there is little communication, both know when and what to do next!

Off they went with their simple, yet fully equipped tools, complete with a fan so neatly resting on the trolley handle - bc it's so hot in the bomb shelter! This is definitely done through experience! Very impressive!
