How To Change Kitchen Cabinets Color?

Want to change the color of kitchen cabinet.

I am not sure what the material they use for the cabinet. It does not like solid wood.

Looks like there is a thin layer of wood (with color face out) sticked to the cabinet.

Is there a product that can paste on the cabinet and change the color?

Yyou need to find out if the your cabinet is plastic veneer or wood veneer. If it is plastic veneer you can try to pull out the old layer and stick a new layer on. Sounds like your kitchen is wood veneered.

Veneer = They paste a thin layer of wood with nice looking grains (patterns) onto a cheaper material (MDF or plywood) to make the final product look better.

I would recommend you first remove the door panels,

then either

1. Use spray paint to respray the surface

Advantages: quick, easy and cheap, and to a large extent you can DIY, wide variety of spray colors to choose from.

Disadvantages: wouldnt last long, the surface is unlikely to be flat (since you didnt sand the surface), and a spray job does require some experience to do it nicely

2. Use a chemical paint remover to remove the old paint (cannot machine sand as veneer is very thin), sand it lightly using hand, then apply whatever new paint you fancy, nippon, spray, wax, oil

Advantages: looks better, last longer

Disadvantages: more troublesome than simply painting over

Think twice before you proceed.

Normal paint; aerosol or turpentine base paint don't stick well on HPL, it is also not suitable on plywood, veneer ply or MDF. board.

I just changed mine... initially respray... but it doesn't last...

Now I use formica , took me a bit of time as I have 22 doors

I use aluminium angle to frame them... quite nice

Plus the weather needs to be sunny and dry. Cannot spray paint in cloudy / rainy weather. Plus you need lots of empty space and it's a messy job so keep your fingers crossed your neighbours don't complain, esp if you are living in HDB. Forget about trying this if you are living in a condo (unless you are going to do it on your own balcony and risk having everything else around it spray painted with the same colour of paint)....

Very smart - know how to use the angle bar to hold the laminates, no worry about peeling.

Plus the weather needs to be sunny and dry. Cannot spray paint in cloudy / rainy weather. Generator - the one widely use in the pasar malam. With fuel, it generates electrical power.

For use of spraying gun, air vessel or compressor is require.

Many people is not aware that use of compressor is require to register with MOM - with a bi-yearly of inspection by registered inspector at a fee of $300/- and the require of certificate of country of manufactureof compressor

Whether you use aresol spray or with the compressor, paint won't last long on HPL.

I would suggest you to try the cabinet sheet (self adhesive). It's available in Creative Wall Decal. Quality is good and come with different length & nice designs. The cost for this is cheap, no harm trying out.
