discoburg 0 Report post Posted April 4, 2010 Had pasted masking tape on the wall and touch up some part of the wall where paint have been chipped off. After painting i removed the masking tape and to my horror, the masking tape removed the paint of the wall where the masking tape have been applied. Anyone knows why is this so? My painting was done by my ID, EDGELINE PLANNERs, sub-contractor.

We didnt apply sealant before painting the walls. We pasted masking tapes on our old paint (Matex) and new paint (Nippon Vinelex). When we pulled off the masking tape, a bit of the old paint came off but not the new paint. It makes me wonder is it due to the brand of the paint? gimz63251073 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2010 According to my painter friend, if you use Matex to paint, you cannot stick masking tape cos the paint will peel off after drying. The painters would use a cardboard to cover when applying Matex paint. I think paint peeling off newly painted walls is largely due to a sub standard job done by painter. MUST complain! gimz63251073 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2010 thats irresponsible...can withhold payment? If full payment made then no choice other than go down showroom n bang table...ah beng style...but things turn ugly, not sure if its worth it... Paint is never made to peel, its the lousy workmanship that causes it.
gladyslim 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2010 Complain useless leh. My contractor say not their fault, its the paint maker fault. Sigh!!! Paint manufacturer won't make such a bad quality paint. Maybe is painter's skill or the type of paint like matex. As for Matex, maybe this is a latex base paint if I'm not mistaken. It is not so well absorbed into the plastered wall and it gives a thick harden coating when dry. Most emulsion paint are water base paint which is well absorb into wall. Paint is never made to peel, its the lousy workmanship that causes it. Yes, paint is never made to peel but doesn't mean it won't peel off over time. Sometime its really got to depend on the conditions of the walls, old paint coats, quality of paints, etc...

Correct way is to use sharp pen knife to cut along the edge before peeling off. Same applied for silicon. You need to handon more. But shouldnt the painter do the necessary work to ensure that it does not peel? u mean to say that the new walls peeling is due to factors which the painter cannot control and we should not blame him for it? bepgof 20 Report post Posted April 9, 2010 (edited) Ok ok you seem pro. Maybe i assume that my contractor will do a good job since i pid them $50+ K for my reno Sorry, I guessed I somehow misunderstood your first post. - Look at the peelled "paint" carefully again, see any layer (plaster layer) came off together with the paint. - If so, the plaster's layer is not adhered strong enough to the base layer - new plaster was applied without wetting the base layer! A "short-cut" by the plastering guy. - May be your painter did not apply "primer" layer so make adhersion force of paint not strong enough. Yes gimz, even using good paint, a newly painted wall also can peel off....and here already got quite a few forumers experienced it. There are quite a few factors that sometimes the painter really cannot control at all and should we really blame them? Now let me ask a question, when u paid for a painting job for a whole hse of 3 rm @ $1K what do u expect the painters to do? Plaster the wall, scrapped off the old paint coats or mold/mildew, patch up holes, paint with sealent, etc?
jaskel 2 Report post Posted April 9, 2010 Do you know the price different of asking Nippon's painter and contractor/ID painter? In this forum, a lot had share their knowledge about paint, what we know, the painter may not know. What the painter know, we already knew.

Plaster the wall, scrapped off the old paint coats or mold/mildew, patch up holes, paint with sealent, etc? tats bad for consumers...i don't really care what they do, as long as the walls are painted and don't peel. My walls are not plastered, so i wasn't expecting them to plaster for me of course. I won't expect the walls to be totally smooth but peeling is not acceptable, thats for sure. would you accept that painters paint your house and it peels off?
