Building A Staircase To My Attic, Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm a newbie looking for some advice.

We had recently bought an inter-terrace. Our master bedroom is rather small, so we had decided to turn the attic into our wardrobe/work-area - maximizing the limited space in the bedroom.

Any ideas on the stairs? I'll need recommendations on contractors who can custom make the stairs or dealers with off-the-shelf solutions? I was hoping to make this the centerpiece of the room, budget around 5-8K (no idea on the cost). We have a toddler at home, so safety is important.

Many thanks~ Looking forward to some great ideas & advices!

Cheers

Congras on your purchase of the terrace house.

From your post, I believe you are looking at a properly constructed staircase. If you already have an attic, you should have a staircase leading upwards to it. If your existing staircase is a "ladder" type of stairs and you want to construct a proper staircase, you will need help from the engineer to compute the load and design the stairs. I think you will also have to send the engineer's drawing/ Architect's plans to URA for approval because this involves structural work and an increased in Gross Floor Area (if your existing attic is illegal).

I doubt the budget of $8K is enough for the professional fees and submission charges imposed by the government agencies. You may want to get an experience contractor or an architect to help you plan and to provide a quote for you.

Cheers!

Thanks for your reply. The current attic is legal, there's already a staircase that leads to it from outside the room. We're considering to "move" that into our MBR - dismantling the existing stairs & re-construct one inside the room.

We tried the spiral type; but don't feel comfortable/safe with it. Will most likely go for the conventional type, even if it takes up more space.

Again, any ideas or referral is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
