this is the view from the main door. i like how bright the whole area is now. sun shines in from the kitchen window in the late afternoon. just nice for drying clothes after washing them in the morning. hahah..

OUt of curiosity, did u have to level the litchen floor to the same height as the dinig area? I understand there is usually a drop down for kitchen floor menaing it is lower thean the dining area floor

spray paint is alot nicer and smoother effect... thou there's really a wastage... but no choice lah.....

by the way, matt black is **** cool!! i nearly went nuts when the shop i got the matt black spray had onli 1 bottle in stock!!! arghhh... and i search the whole bras basah but could not find it!! haizzzz...

my bird cage is a mixture of matt black and glossy black (which is lacquer over the matt black) and i kinda like the effect! hee...

Hi Mookie,

levelling of kitchen was done as we wanted to extend the living room. Yes the kitchen has a 8cm drop (thereabouts) as compared to living room.

Here is how we did ours.

Bird Cage DIY

Things to do:

1. Buy bird cage, buy the light connector (got ours from ikea), buy light bulb.

2. drill a hole at the top of the bird cage for the wire to go thru.

3. connect up the light connector

4. fix on light bulb

there you go.

Still need an electrician to connect the lighting of course... Fairly easy!

depending on whether you want the wooden look, u can spray it using acrylic spray - around $3.50 per can. Tons of colours to choose from.

Have fun!

Your reno look great except....your DIY Bird Cage seem like not fit in your industrial theme, sorry to said that. Maybe wire nest or just bare bulb will do.

very hard to stick to a particular theme... for example wifey like concrete floor very much but decided against it as she is afraid our parents may freak out... we try to put in industrial elements like metal as much as possible though and keeping it uncluttered. We tried as much as possible to use industrial things, will get a industrial rack later to use as bookcase, i suppose.

Also, venetian blinds would be more industrial lookalike, but we preferred roller blinds for the cleaner look.

so i wouldn't say that ours is industrial theme, rather a simple white flat with some industrial elements inside.

might be a little too late now, completed reno already...

though we prefer a more uncluttered look, looking to add some more items like a feature wall.

one way of looking at it is: human is fickle-minded.

the other way of looking at it is: trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. take for eg. in person, we may not like modernism or minimalism that much (nor even understand what those terms mean). however, as those designs seem to be in vogue, we build our modern or minimal home. subsequently, when we start to live in physically, we start to purchase lots of lace stuff, antique furniture, etc, because that's what we like (in person). what happens next? the modern or minimal home no longer look modern or minimal. hence, i believe it's better (and easier) to design a home around the owners than the owners around the home.

my mood board for 'industrial' theme would probably consist of these items:

industrial light trays

cable trays (clean up the edges and use them as shelving perhaps)

instead of typical drawers and stuff, can consider tool cabinets (minus the wheels and ikea has something similar).

if you want the ultimate industrial item, go for metal cabinets

for something cutesy, a key drop or letterbox could be nice (need to repurpose it though)

Had thought of using this as shoe cabinet, the dimensions fit perfectly for us:

For coffee table, intend to do tyre coffee table. Stack 3 to 4 old tyres sprayed in white and put a piece of plastic on top. Have yet to execute, waiting for dad's tyre to retire...

But now fickle minded me is thinking to replace the tyre coffee table with a tool box cabinet...haha...

btw, i love your birdcage lamp. very professionally done however, if you want an 'industrial' theme, you can consider these type of industrial lamp also. set of 3's in red would be nice to give some warmth and colour.

initially, i had thought of using this daybed as my sofa as well. but later, realised it didn't fit in with the way i envisage my place. glad you use it, with a slightly higher/harder mattress (to counter the bar in front), it should make a nice sofa.

for coffee table, i don't think the old tires is an ideal solution. tires are 'soft' and they wobble, hence, unstable. i can suggest the following if you want something unique:

just need to find some sort of drum to do the job.

we bought a thin piece of mattress (pasar malam kind) to increase the height. Now it wouldnt hurt our legs. A very comfy place for 2 to sit and chat/watch tv.... though parents thought it didn't really look like a sofa...

the drum sounds good...think my dad might have lobang to find it...
