CUTEBABY 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2008 hi all, there are a few types of ppl to look out for. This is what i found suspicious. 1) 2 men pushing a big box(like some type of household applicance such as washing machine). They have like APPEARED on my level 2 times already. Both time, it is in the afternoon and they took a lift to my level( not from the carpark). Which means, they PURPOSELY came to the level, YET, they seems to GO TO THE WRONG level coz both time, they will look around and leave. 2) 1 middle-age man carrying a bag. The bag looks like those bag where workers placed their toolkits. This man came in the early evening. Again, purposely took lift to my level and look around then left. In case u all are wondering, my level ar.... 1 unit had yet to finish renovation. 3 units always open wooden door. Hence, I do not think ANYTHING could have happen and ANYTHING could be done. Perhap that account for why these man just "lookaound" and left. On a side note, beware of the following people. 1) 1 early 30s female indian with her little boy. 2) 1 late 40s female indian. (In pajamas) I have not met the 40s female indian. But it happened to my neighbour. This is what happened. I am at home cooking when someone pressed my dorbell urgently. I went to the door and there I saw the early 30s female with her boy. She sounded urgent and told me she is my neighbour from #02-37. Although I thought no one on the level 2 had moved in yet, i took her words for it as she sounded urgent. She told me her elder son is in hospital. Broke his leg or what. She needs to rush to hospital, but she cant get her husband. She hoped i can lend her $55. Looking at her anxious face, I took my last $50 note and passed to her. Very soon, I realised I was cheated coz there is no #02-37. So ppl, dun be too kind. Well, at least, if you wanna help out, then please remember to check IC. Haiz.. this incident made me racist. Sorry, but i cant help it. Saw this imitation dome camera selling at $25 at SelfFix recently, maybe we should consider installing one above our main door to deter would be cheats and thefts. Again, purposely took lift to my level and look around then left. Could this be the uncle who change the hinges for the metal gate...in the event you guys are approached pls check carefully when he mentioned abt the security of changing the hinges of the gate.. he will not inform you of any payment until the hinges are changes...keep saying it's approved by hdb a few times..keep "ngeh ngeh" hdb here and there...then proceed to show u on 1 hinge as to how easy it is to open the metal gate etc.. then there was no payment mentione watsoever...by the time u say ok change adn it is done..he asked "u mean u dun knw hv to pay ah ??" ...then no choice have to pay lor.. meepok 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2008 For the benefit of fellow 79ers who did not buy yesterday's TNP... Break-ins, thefts, murder... Cops & residents patrol high-rise Toa Payoh blocks Thieves hit units under renovation By Celine Lim August 21, 2008 TOA Payoh Central's soaring, new HDB blocks have been attracting attention lately. Not just for their imposing 40-storey height, but for some unseemly goings-on. This year, Blocks 79A to 79E, which were completed last year, have seen break-ins, thefts and even one murder. Some residents, who were part of the selective en-bloc redevelopment scheme, moved in at the end of last year. For some, the death of Block 79C resident Koh Sam Hong, 73, who was found stabbed in the chest on 31Jul, was the last straw. They e-mailed The New Paper with their concern at what they saw as the 'large number of crimes... break-ins, car break-ins and even a murder' in the new estate. The police, while unable to provide crime statistics for the blocks, are aware of the residents' concerns and are educating them on crime prevention measures. A crime prevention advisory, posted in the lift lobbies on 18Jun, mentioned eight cases of thefts-in-dwelling at Blocks 78 and 79 between January and June. The culprits usually hit units under renovation. They would tamper with the locks or cut the metal chains used by contractors to secure the main door. Items stolen included refrigerators, DVD recorders, home theatre systems, ceiling fan lights and cables. Furniture Stolen A couple living in Block 79C said the furniture was stolen while their unit was being renovated three months ago. A Housing Board (HDB) spokesman said nearly two-thirds of the 1,158 units in the five towers of Block 79 are now occupied, with more expected to be filled from next month. Some residents reported the crimes through an online renovation forum. In one posting on 17May, forum writer meowie49 said her TV splitter and doorbell casing had been stolen. Two days later, she posted: 'When the HDB guy came, we asked if he can take the neighbour's (doorbell casing) for us first (as they had not moved in). He checked and said theirs was stolen too.' Another forum writer, jacky777, said the electrical switches and socket outlets in the Block 79 flats were stolen as they are 'a well-known brand'. Madam Ryane Lim, 25, a bank executive, said a decorative marine bell hung outside her flat was stolen a few weeks ago. She said: 'I went out for an hour and when I returned, it was gone. My husband bought it in Germany and was upset.' But not all residents are worried. At least 10 residents whom The New Paper approached said they had not heard of any thefts or break-ins. A 72-year-old retiree, Mr Chong, said: 'I think it's very safe here. Nothing has happened to me or to anyone I know.' Others shrugged off the incidents. Mr Titus Chia, 38, a musician, said: 'I think the crimes will stop once the delivery men and contractors finish their work.' Loiterers But one thing that's unlikely to change is the people who loiter in the sky garden late into the night. The sky garden, the first of its kind in an HDB estate, is a 12th-storey landscaped path linking all the blocks. A resident who lives next to it said people are there 'at all times of the day'. The sales executive, who wanted to be known only as Madam Lum, 30, said: 'In the day, there are people studying and playing their stereo. At night, I've seen couples petting. 'My brother-in-law has seen people vomiting. They had alcohol with them.' Some visitors to the garden do not live there. Madam Lim said: 'There's been graffiti - words sprayed or written on chairs and tables. But it's a public garden. We can't stop people from using it.' The HDB spokesman said: 'Security factors are carefully considered in the design of HDB flats and precincts. 'The sky garden adopts an open concept that is seen easily from the surrounding blocks. Carparks are built at easily accessible locations with decks and staircases that can be viewed by residents.' But residents themselves need to be vigilant, the spokesman added, especially if the precinct is new and residents are moving in progressively. meowie49 1 Report post Posted August 21, 2008 Something to share with all forumers... Initially, there is 1 neighbour whose metal gate lock is stucked and gate cannot open. We thought it is someone trying to break open the gate. Today, another neighbour told me abt her metal gate locked spoilt too. Then I realised mine is also shaky already.. Hmmmm.... according to this neighbour, when her locksmith came, he told her that the lock was made with inferior quality material. I intend to go to the service center and request for my lock to be changed tomorrow. Will inform you all of the outcome.

meepok 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2008 (edited) Heard from the grapevine that the TC/RC has taken notice of our concerns. They are aware of the on-going nuisance and will be coming up with some measures to hopefully resolve the situation on the Sky Garden. Let's hope for some good news in the coming weeks. I'll rest my case for the time being. Edited August 21, 2008 by meepok
Hana79 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2008 I can help with putting up the signs but first I got to know the TC's stand on this... will I be penalised for displaying these signs instead? Cos it's also a form of vandalism since I'm not authorised by the TC or HDB. Can any of the RC or TC people reading advise on this? Hana79? Hi Meepok, I aint no authority on tis but I reckon we r not empowered w da right to post any bills, signs, banners etc there.. then urs & Alister's efforts go to waste only.. alister 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2008 Hi all Just had a quick chat with the RC chairman this afternoon. He is aware of our concerns and is addressing them. Pls give them time to work out a solution. As it involves many parties, they definitely need some time to study. If I am installing CCTV at the garden, I will require at least 3 month duration - invite tender, figure out best location to mount the cameras, decide who's responsible to monitor it 24 x 7. If crime is spotted, what is the procedure to follow etc. Even asking the painters to paint over those "wordings" on the wall, they need to get approval for the budget to spend and getting the contractors to find a time to come down etc. So pls tone down those bashing as they are volunteers just out to help us residents. Like I said earlier, one of the renotalk member is also a RC member. In a way, we should appreciate their effort as they hold full time jobs as well. I suggest we still go ahead with the planned meeting with the police to highlight our concerns. For those who don't know me, I am not a govt spy or supporter; just happen that I try to put myself in their shoes. I have talked to Meepok and he agrees with me on certain points so let's make peace currently. Side issue - I also have my wife and my sandals missing when I put it out at the open shoe rack outside my hse; so I just keep it in hse now as my floor receives many "visitors" at night. And alot of couples carrying out their courtship at the staircase.
