coldflamez 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2010 Hi guys, need to check on something. I want to change the lock on my main door but my contractor said that i can only change with another lock of the exact same design. If not, the new lock cannot fit into the hole for the previous lock. Does anyone have experience with this? I don't want to use the old lock design as it is the kind where there is a handle on the outside, meaning other people can open the door from the outside of the house if the door is not locked.. Hope to get some advice on this, thks!

Batman 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2010 i chg my main door lock from normal to digital type. my existing one was bigger than the new one. hence e installer put in a piece of 'metal adapter' to 'fill up' the empty space. i think ur concern shld be: 1) whether e shop u gonna buy ur lock provide any installation service or not 2) if yes, how much do they charge for installation? also take a few pics of ur existing door lock so that u can show e shop staff to get a better estimate, else there could be hidden costs. Thanks batman and zezuzu for the reply. My main concern is to be able to change the existing lock to another one of different design. Seems that should be doable... I'm not looking for digital lock, just need a normal lock without a handle to turn on the outside. Don't have a pic of my lock now, it looks roughly like this: pic taken from the net

Zezuzu 0 Report post Posted February 18, 2010 (edited) cold, just for ur info, change of the design is all depend on the lock case. does not mean can or cannot. just tat, if the lock case is different from ur current one, it may turn up more costly. coz, the setup of the lock case will be likelyhood different from other manufactory or model. which resulted, more works to put in if after changed the lock case, be it the hole is slightly bigger or even totally not on the same old spot. ------------------- oasis, are u refering to the service & workmanship for changing a lock with lock or the brand of the lock ? if u refer to the brand, personally, i dun have any to recommand. Thanks Edited February 18, 2010 by Zezuzu

blue_skies 3 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 The best way to do this is to remove the door handle and bring it to a shop to get an exact fit. There are two shops which sell a good variety of door handles / locks: Thye Seng Hardware Enterprise. 122 Sims Avenue Geylang (near Lorong 15), 387445, Shanghai Tong Lee, Jln Sultan, Textile Centre (on the ground floor) Thye Seng is open only until 12pm or 1pm on Sat. Not sure abt Shanghai Tong Lee as I've not bought stuff from there before. If you are unable to remove the door handle yourself, then it would probably be best to get a locksmith to do the job. Your contractor is right about the lock - you need to get an exact fit. You might be able to get a slightly different design, but you'll need to know the exact dimensions so best is to bring your old lock down to check. Good luck!
