Recommendation For A/v Receiver And 5.1 Speakers

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I only started to follow this thread today! And a lot of HT experts seem to be here too.

As more and more Media Players are available on the market, like Popcorn, Dune, AC-Ryan; the battle between Sigma-based and Realtek chipsets. These players can output DTS etc. People are also using software to rip their Bluray into mkv files for storage onto NAS for jukebox-like access.

With the above developments, I am also looking into a Popcorn C200 set. When we move to this setup, are we still looking at the same type of HT 5.1 systems? Because over here, we've been talking about upscaling, HDMI out from DVD/BluRay players.... My assumption today is:

Popcorn Video-out (HDMI) to TV

Popcorn Audio-out (Digital coax) to AV receiver then to HT 5.1

Pls correct me if I am wrong.

Just connect HDMI from Popcorn Hour C200 (Video and Audio out) to AV Receiver will do..

That's the whole purpose of having AV receiver where its one point of receiving all video and audio inputs.

Hi bro Vicenzo70 & all other experts here,

I seriously need some expert opinions from you... my dad's got a Yamaha AV amp DSP-AX1 and Mission speakers (3 way front - 783, center - 78c, surround - 78ds), Energy eSXL12 sub). All these are 9 yrs old and the AX1 is spoilt (probably due to under-usage for the past 2 yrs).

Hence, I've bought a Denon AVR-3310 and hook up to the mission speakers. However, the sound quality just doesn't sound great. I think I've set up correctly as I've been configuring for the past 2 weeks.

Q1. Is the 3310 under-powered and not able to drive my speakers or it is really because I've miss out some important set up?

Q2. Btw, audessy auto setup have set my front speakers crossover at 40hz, do you think by right should set minimally to 80hz?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

You have to check if your mission handles that low in the first place? WHat is the freq range? How abt the cross over for your sub?

MISSION 783 (front):

Frequency response ±3dB: 38Hz — 20kHz

Nominal Impedance 6 Ohms compatible (min. 5Ω)

Recommended amplifier power 50-200W

Crossover frequency 120Hz and 2.5kHz

So is there any wrong with my settings (audessy set as follows)?

My channel level is as follows:

Front L: -4.0db

Center: -2.0db

Front R: -5.5db

Surround L: -6.0db

Surround R: -6.0db

S/W: -12.0db

Crossover:

Front - 40hz

Center - 40hz

Surround - 80hz

SUB:

Nominal (RMS) Output Power: 150 Watt

Max (RMS) Output Power: 600 Watt

-3dB Frequency Response: 20 - 100 Hz

Crossover Frequency: 80Hz, 50 - 100Hz

I've turn the knobs on the sub as follows (I think), during the audessy set up:

Phase: 0 degree (min 0, max 180)

EQ: 0 (min -3db, max +3db)

LP filter: 70hz (min 0hz, max 120hz)

Bass volume: 7 (min 0, max 12)

But I gonna re-calibrate again coz I think the above settings is wrong... should set to max 120hz for LP, right? Any idea on the phase which I set to 0?

If you want your sub to handle most of the low freq, you can set the cross-over at 80hz.

Phase is up to you...you just need to set it accordingly to your pref. on the fullness of the base generated. What was the sub LP set to when you did the calibration?

Sharing with everyone some pics of my new Onkyo 508 and Deftech 600 speakers. All entry level and good enough for my novice hearing. :D

During audessy calibration,

I set LP to 70hz, Phase set to 0 degree.

- U mean 0 degree = less fullness whereas 180 deg is more fullness?

- Does that mean if I set front speaker crossover = 80hz, anything lower than 80hz will be handled by subwoofers?

- I set LFE+main and front spk set as LARGE spk, hence doing the "double bass" coz my fronts is 3 way speakers, this is alright if I'm not wrong?

Thanks.

Its a bit strange that your Mission 783 floorstander has a cross frequency of 120Hz. Its normally for sat spekers.

never mind, try to recalibrate your front& center at 120Hz & see if there's any difference. Update us.

Cheers

about $1.8k+

Congrats on your new system.

What sub youre using? Youre aware that Onkyo 508 dont calibrate subwoofers & video upscaling rite?

Cheers

Phase is dependent on where your sub is place and the walls around it so you just have to adjust it till your liking. I normally left it at 0.

Yes to qns 2

Ok for qns 3

Just perform another calibrate and see what are the settings.
